I've got some stuff to give away and was thinking of doing it via Facebook. I've done a couple of comps before and was wondering what format gets the best results.

For me the best results would be getting new 'fans' joining the page. Every comp gets a few but they're probably people who like comps rather than my website.

The comps I've done in the past have been along the lines of a question and then the user answers it by posting it on the wall. I then draw the winner out the hat.

It's not a bad method but I was wondering if there's anything more effective? Even if it's a twist on that idea.

Like all things it depends, the lower the work required by the user naturally the more people who will participate.

Winner out of the hat is one way, another way is to use "like" button on peoples replies, user with most likes wins. So for example, put up a picture and ask for a funny caption etc.

Other alternative is to use something like WildFireApp, they have a range of software (free to paid) available for running facebook comps. I've used their white label product a couple of times and its worked well.
