The first thing you need to do is get followers otherwise your efforts will be wasted!

Use Twitter to post links to current projects, pictures of your work, anything to get people excited about your products or services.

You should determine some strategies first:
    - will you do the customer support via Twitter or just throw away some links?
    - what will be the information you are sharing: promos, news, pics, videos, any related info to your industry etc.
    - who will be posting everything? John, Mark or Sarah, o maybe you will not introduce and communicate personally (personality can be fake in some cases).
    - how often do you want to post?
    - will you be chatting with other people about the issues which are non-related to your industry.

Also, as mentioned above, you may some followers which are not easy to get. Collecting all spammers to your followers will not bring you any effect as you need real people or business reps.

It might take sometime for you to create a strong network as far as websites like Facebook and Twitter are concerned. However once that is done, it wont take a lot of time to establish a great web presence. You can also promote your blogs or articles in these social media websites.

The best thing is to post interesting comments on subjects using hashtags and if people find and like them they will start to follow you.

As mentioned above start following but try to follow those who are related to your business or profession or to whom you can offer your services.
start posting about your services, products and other features on regular basis. Maintain your online presence.

The one thing I would recommend - start conversations, don't just blanket Twitter with posts about how awesome you are. As with all lines of marketing, you need to engage your potential customers. Find people who are talking about things close to what you are selling and reply to their tweets, get conversations going...

Twitter is good for both driving traffic to your websites and networking with others in your niche but as many above me had said to get anywhere with it you really need to work on building up your followers. None of the buying followers crap - get good relevant followers that are interested in your content and you will do pretty well.

Make sure to keep your tweets interesting and fresh. No one want to follow an account that just churns out boring and irrelevant tweets. Throw in some cool images and videos as an added incentive for people to keep following you.

What would be really interesting is to hear the feedback from the customers' point of view. There are a lot of businesses and merchants always talking about the best ways to drum up business, but it's rare that the customers have their own say in these discussions.
