Hi Jonathan
I clicked on one of the buy buttons, and all I get are a load of mysql and php error messages at the top of the page. If you don't want the site hacked, you should not display any error messages to the screen - it gives hackers a lot of info about the directory structure of your site and what weaknesses there are in your code.
Tried a few links and a lot do not work with javascript disabled. Used another browser with js enabled and discovered a whole lot of navigation which I had not seen before. What you see without js is also what the search engines see - they don't read any links in forms or js. Basically this means that you are restricting which pages can be indexed. As a minimum, you should have a link to the site map page so that search engines can visit there and find all your site.
Sorry, just looked at the code and see that you are using hidden text for the search engines - correct coding is to use the NOSCRIPT tag to make the site accessible to non-javascript browsers and to avoid the risk of the competition from reporting your site for using hidden content.
I am also not too sure about the marketing wisdom of having your best sellers on the 'clearance and special offers' page.
The displayed url link for the products on the special offers page is not the same as the link that is displayed in the search bar - and I gave up waiting for the page to load about the same time as my browser stopped trying. A problem with mod-rewrite, perhaps?
The code used is not the correct standard for the DOCTYPE declared. You are missing a few closing tags which could be affecting how your site is displayed by browsers. And, someone forgot to complete the css definitions.
Code:
http://www.homecinemauk.com/
CSS Error (85/1855): Unknown CSS property “undefined”.
CSS Error (85/2594): Unknown CSS property “undefined”.
I like the overall colour scheme. My only reservation is that all the menus are the same colour. Do I look left or right? What is important? - better click on a red image as that has caught my eye.
For your buying guides, having links within the text to other pages and to the glossary of terms would enhance them. Reading some of the articles, I am not too sure who they are aimed at. Nor do the first few sentences necessarily tell me that I am reading the article I need to read. But then, I don't know anything about the industry.
