In short Opt-In requires some sort of affirmative action by the user, such as typing in their email address on a website to sign up to a newsletter.

Opt-out is where users are automatically signed-up to a newsletter and they have to do some sort of affirmative action to get themselves removed.

Obviously opt-out therefore is somewhat frowned upon.

Double Opt-in or comfirmation opt-in is where the email address of an opt-in request is confirmed by sending an email asking if they wanted to sign-up, only when they respond positively do they get added to the newsletter. This (amongst other things) is to stop other people signing people up to newsletters they don't want.

    regards,
    David

    David is spot on.

It's so incredibly frustrating that most businesses seem to opt people into their newsletters just for signing-up to their website or even making an enquiry. Then you have to jump through hoops to unsubscribe. Makes me hesitant to sign-up to any new service nowadays.

People should only be subscribed to newsletters if they have specifically ticked a box to ask to be opted in. But, hey, when did ethics ever come into it business for some?

For most of costumers, You will need 5-9 messages to till an action is made
So Opt in (into a mailing list) is the way to go
Opt out as said already is getting out of the list

    Cheers, Emil
