Just wanna check the interflora terms with you. It looks like that if I bid on some flower keywords which go to a page on my site that has other flower companies on them as well as interflora than my contract will be terminated. To me this is pathetic. Here is what they write:

Important notice - Interflora may terminate this agreement with immediate effect if:

the Affiliate uses the word "Interflora" or any similar word (whether visually or aurally similar), including, but without prejudice to the generality of this clause, the word Intaflora, or

the Affiliate uses the Company's Keywords (as notified to the Affiliate in writing by Interflora from time to time and as displayed in the FAQ) or any similar words (whether visually or aurally similar)

for the purpose of diverting Users to non-Interflora sites or giving priority to non-Interflora sites over www.interflora.co.uk

In summary, interflora.co.uk expects that members of the Interflora affiliate program do NOT bid on the search term 'Interflora' (or variations of this word) or competitively bid on primary keywords as supplied by Interflora.

->The keywords they state are :
flower
florist
wedding flower
balloon
flower delivery
christmas flowers
send flower
valentines flowers
mothers day flowers

This rediculous and if it means what I think it means then I won't be putting them on!

From Flower merchants used, even though Interflora is the most recognised brand, it wasn't our best earner, so when GENERIC term limitations are imposed like this we use our DB of 5000 keywords to drive to an alternative merchant.

The commission is very low at 3%, when on other sources offer £4 per sale for the same merchant like advertising.com.

On a £40 bouquet of flowers £1.20 versus £4..hmm... no competition...me thinks

We were an affiliate of Interflorarse back in 98-99 when they operated an independent program - kind of in the early days.

A more arrogant worthless bunch of self-opinionated good-for-nothings who more than likely could not get jobs anywhere else were taking over when we bailed out in 2000.

One of my greatest joys now is to use all of their Tradenames - and the generic terms they don't want their affiliates to use- in procurring traffic fron places like the big G, and then enticing those customers to use other florists who are cheaper, better to work with, and who pay a much better commission. It gives me even more gratification to see the word Interflora amongst our top 10 search words every week.

Somebody really should explain to Interflorarse that selling flowers is not much different to selling bunches of flowers at the traffic lights..... isn't it?

...oh and by the way,

it is my understanding that Interflorarse cannot legally stop or prevent an affiliate from using any generic search terms. Under EC law, this would consitute an unlawful restraint of fair trade - and if you could show that they had terminated your affiliate relationship for this reason, and you could prove it - they would be made to look like total fools in court.

Shouldn't somebody in the position of being in charge of their affiliate program know this? Yes they can dictate the use of any and all of their Trademarks - but certainly not generic terms. This applies to all merchants too not just "gods gift to flower pickers".

Actually this puts the Affiliate Networks in a very interesting situation. Should'nt they be telling the merchant that they cannot legally make such demands of their affiliates? Or are they just sucking up to the merchant by agreeing to go along with and enforce these unlawful requests?

Or maybe did'nt they know that this consituted unlawful restriction of Trade? Well they do now!

I agree with you.. networks should be telling merchants that such demands are not on.. as it harms other merchants on the same network, reduces revunue for everyone.

Anyway optimise your pages for "internet" and "flora".. with good optimisation you could take position 1 for "interflora"

except isn't 'internet' a google ignore word?

not up on this issue but spoke with a client involved with wills and although I don't provide SEO services commerically I did wonder how they would cope with the fact that 'will' is another word google ignores.

OK, so off topic slightly but anyone have details on optimising phrases that include common words that are typically ignored?

I typed internet flora and got different results to just using the word flora. So its not ignored.
