Thread: Are my Links being tracked correctly i.e Dixons, Currys?

I am new to affiliate marketing, and I am beginning to wonder if I am wasting my time with tradedoubler? Basically my site has only been fully up and running since December, during that month I did a special feature on DVD players. I managed to achieve 35 DVD player sales through Amazon, with only about 200 of my deep links to amazon being clicked on. But Amazon only accounted for <10% of my deep links. Dixons, Currys, John lewis accounted for about 70% of my deep links these generated a total of 3 sales and going by the value of the sales they where not DVD players. Comet through DGM generated as good as Amazon for the amount of links I had to it. Is this a typical conversion rate for Dixons etc? Does not add up to me. Considering the performance of Amazon and Amazon having no cookies.

    Hi,

    Welcome to the board will68,

Sounds like it could be right, Amazon does have a great reputation and so conversion even without a cookie is high. Comet seems to be recognised around here as the leading electrical retailer and that's how it works for me too. John Lewis might have done better but it does all sound realistic to me.

Dixons, Currys, The Link & PCWorld are all poor (or non existent) convertors... the fact they're all the same company and that many people don't do well out of them could possibly indicate that either people just "window shop" or that the sites are so bloomin' slow and cumbersome that people buy elsewhere..

and now that Amazon are flogging TVs things can only get better with them

Have to agree with this. It's a painful process, even on broadband to surf these sites let alone buy anything.

Thing about PC World is and I do this all the time, in fact just bought a new computer an hour ago.. is I look at the site, see what I want, find out about the machine and then head in to the store to buy it and take it home. I bet loads of other people do the same. I would buy via my affiliate link but end of the day why pay £15 and have not a clue when it will turn up.. they say 5 days, however you can drive to a store 10 mins away in most city's and pick it up. Now things like a fridge freezer or washing machine have to be delivered anyway so they are good things to promote for people to buy online.

A lot of people just use the Dixons and family sites just to find out how much they could save from other people. I build white box PCs and I often tell people to look at similar machines on PCWorlds site to see how cheap mine are. That only stung me once, when PCWorld made a spelling mistake and asvertised a Sony Vaio for £75.00! Needless to say, I placed an order, but they didn't honour it!

I bought an MP3 Jukebox from the PC World site, and it wasn't a pleasant experience. I imagine they have a lot of people abandon their order and go somewhere else.

The only reason I bought it online was because it was £50 cheaper than their stores (and it was cheaper than anywhere else online).
But it took 40 minutes to buy the thing, the site was just so slow. Several times the pages just timed out and I had to start again. This was during the sale when the site was particularly busy, but it's slow at other times too.

These sites have been like this for as long as I can remember, I'm amazed they haven't done anything about it.

The likes of Dixons and Currys would have to pay me 20% commission to make them as good as some of the other electrical retailers.

Also another thing you should keep in mind is that Comet offer online prices cheaper than in the store, the others do not. Now I know Comet only offer 3% (more if you do well) but when you think about it, if it's a choice from promoting Dixons at a crummy 2% (what's that all about!) and Comet on 3% (but the prices are lower so you have a hook to buy online) then it has to be Comet... that makes Comet sense LOL

I really do object to big high street brands offering shocking low % on products when an online operation if they had half a clue what they where doing would be cheaper to run, and so more profit for them that they could pass on to the sales force (us) or marketing companies they use. Comet is low percentage but like I said they have the hook.. Same with someone like Play.com they could only offer a really low percentage as there prices are so low as they stand, but you would get more volume so it would work out better, well that's my thoughts.

Comet's base rate is only 2.5%, and in theory it's easier to get to Dixons 4% rate than it is to get 3% with Comet.
But Comet converts so much better the commission rate isn't an issue when comparing the two.

    I hate shopping online!

The second time this month Ive bought something only too have it delivered with the wrong stuff inside!!

Now ive gotta phone em up , arrange to have it collected and expect the best part of a week to get this sorted.

And guess what theres a shop about 10mins drive from me that sells this item.. Infinity 42.5i 4in. Kappa speakers I could have picked em up last week and have the bloody things already.

We are in the process of moving house....and therefore for some strange reason (according to the good lady) we have to buy new everything, cutlery, table & chairs, curtains, lights etc etc.

So i sent her online the other day..these where her findings.

Blimey this could be market research..i must be a proffesional now...

John lewis.." most of the stuff i want is out of stock"
    Currys.."crap" too slow
Debenhams "liked" but purchasing process had too many buttons and was longwinded

After about 40 mins she was bored and said she would rather go view the items at the relevent stores, then purchase online to recieve our "discount" lol

online shopping still has a lot of improving to do
