Anyone know of a site plugin of sorts that will check the exchange rate for a certain currency - I'd prefer not to have ads.

You can license a feed from xe.com or just sign up to use their ordinary feed which does carry banner advertising.

thanks. i have looked at xe and thought it was a bit overpriced for what i needed.
