Re: HotelClub
We used them on a lot of our sites, but got virtually no conversions compared to the other affiliate content, most likely because they had a large phone number at the bottom of the visible screen and a thing about call this number to book. Online booking was well below the fold (on 1024 x 768) and everytime you changed the dates, it jumped to the top of the page again (showing said phone number). Couldn't be removed for the affiliate version apparently.
The points thing really confused me for a while, so not sure what Joe Public made of that. It did disappear for a little while, but then came back.
I think we dropped them across most sites in the end because we had to wait for replies from the affiliate mananagement company who had to talk to Aus which being several hours ahead meant everything had a next day lag. When we did get replies, the impression I got from correspondence I saw from the tech dept in Aus was that they really didn't care what affiliates thought and they were running it so they were right.
Maybe things have improved with a more dedicated affiliate manager, but in that market there are a lot of good players esp. Superbreak, Laterooms and Alpharooms plus the people like Sunshine.co.uk who I hear good things about, so to do well they need to take into account what the affiliates say.
