Whats OS are you running?
Hi guys,
I am currently hosting on US Servers and my host said he will move me to a UK server in the next few weeks. An issue for me has been website loading time so he has insured that the new servers are faster. The 'specs' are below. I do not know much about hosting so not sure if this is infact fast or not:
The server that I have ordered is a Core2Quad with 8 Gb of RAM connected
to 100 Mbps port speed,
Old server was Dual core with 2 Gb RAM connected to 100 Mbps
Cost: 2Gb space, 50 Gb traffic per month, for USD 23 per month
How does that sound to you guys? Good, bad, average?
Thanks,
Marc
Whats OS are you running?
Sounds cheap for a dedicated server. Or is it semi-dedicated or virtual?
Are you using the whole server, or are you using a hosting account shared with others on the server mentioned?
Wow, that's really cheap,if it is a dedicated server![]()
If he describes this as a "dedicated server" I'd be supicious.
It's way too cheap for the specs by a huge margin, and I'm very confused about the 2GB drive space. Considering any server is going to have a hard drive of 100GB+ you should be getting a lot more than 2GB for web files. There will be the OS files, logs and other gubbins of course, but even if it's Windows it doesn't take 98GB in this case.
It sounds like what they're actually offering is a reseller package on a server which is very, very different. Might even be running a virtual machine which will appear as if your sites have all that hardware but in reality lots of other virtual machines are running on it. The one thing you can't virtualise is hard drive space. Def not the same as a dedicated server.
Oh interms of specs - yeah it's pretty darned quick especially with 8GB Ram. Assuming it's 64bit Linux or Windows (as Windows 32bit can't use more than 3GB). If it's Windows hosting then that suggests even more than this is a virtual machine as you can split the memory into 3GB chunks on a per virtual machine basis.

If you're hosting a simple website then any dedicated server will be fast enough to host pages.
The problems usually come when you have database queries to do. Doing your queries badly can be a massive performance killer.
By the looks of your spec and prices I don't think you have a dedicated server.

I agree you're probably looking at this potentially being a virtual machine = similar to a shared web sever except that every customer gets their own "virtual system" right down to everyone potentially running a different operating system (which would mean you'd probably have more space than 2 gigs per customer but some virtual systems run everyone off the same copy of the OS - this is not as secure and dedicated). Regardless - then you would be competing with other clients for the 8 gigs of ram and the usage of the quad core cpu. It might be regulated in many ways or throttled. So your speed won't depend on the machine - it will depend on the load other customers are putting on the machine vs your site.
Consider this though.. even if you are getting a dedicated server that say maybe has a 10 gig drive in it and your host needs 8 gigs of that space for some odd reason and is letting you have the other two... he's charging you $23/month for a quad core dedicated server? That leads you to ask how high a quality quad core cpu, motherboard, hard drive, case, power supply, and fans he purchased. Do you really want your business running on a Lada? Didn't think so. If it sounds too cheap to be true IT IS. You should not be hosting on $300 machines. In fact outside of hobbyists hosting from home, if a server costs less than $1000-2000 to build (hence they would charge you around $100 a month + for dedicated server hosting with a reliable and not so shady host) I'd walk away. If you're talking about a virtual private server I'd guess half that price depending on how the computers resources are throttled and what vps software they're using - if it provides you a completely solitary environment on the machine away from other users or not.
It may seem complicated but even if you don't understand the numbers and terms, try to step back from the offers you're looking at and read between the lines.
If your common sense tells you something ain't right here.. go someplace else. It's a big internet.

The best joomla templates are here.
At that price it will be a reseller, maybe of a reseller! and as for load times there are three possibilities; something configured wrong, overselling on the server and there are thousands of websites running on it or the server is located in the west of the US.

Hi guys,
Wow, thanks for all the comments and advice.
I spoke to the guy and he said that it is a Virtual server. Am finding out now the OS.
Also, it is located in the UK.
It has to be a virtual private server because the specifications which you have mentioned and the the price which you are paying is far less for a full fledge dedicated server of that specification. The dedicated server specification which you have mentioned would cost around £250 - £300 per month. It might sound costly for you but don't forget its a UK based server and not US based.
After the OS installation how much free space is available for use ?
