anyone used this method before?

success?......waste of time and money?

anyone managed to grab a url with high volumes of traffic that someone forgot to renew?

While trying to get my new domains pointing to the server which seems rather slow this time.

I was reading to see how many domains you can actually have on one server but nothing was showing for the information I wanted, but....

Maybe stating the obvious to some but not others

When you register a domain, it tags it, the domain owner is given the chance of renewing the subscription. If the domain owner cannot be reached then it is detagged.

Nominet cannot specify when domains are available as it`s first come first served basis.

So the chances are it would access a database looking for these tags, if you say you wanted www.test123.com it would do a daily or hourly search on those domain names to check to see if there still tagged. If there not then your alerted to it.

Chances are this maybe wrong but was the impression I got

Hi tomj,

The backordering services vary and I've had mixed success.

I've only used snapnames once (for a dot.com) and it missed it. The domain's now got an alexa rank of 6,000 - such a shame. I might have just been unlucky however.

The .co.uk domain backorder services are better I believe, although I've had mixed success again. Detagged.co.uk do a service which claims to get about 80% of the booked names, so if you're lucky you can grab a brilliant name.

Detagged basically works by calculating when the name will drop, and then registering it a few minutes after the calculation specifies. I think the guy who runs the service is coming to the get2gether, so you can grill him on the mechanics then

Hope this helps.

Chris

I've bought several domains using Snapnames, and have had a better than 50% success rate.

You need the google toolbar for the PR (Page Rank)

As for exisiting links, links:yourdomain.com is whats supposed to work according to google, but never does for me, I know someones got me on a website but never shows.

As for your PR rating, according to some points of view, that disapears when you transfer it, not saying thats 100% the case but......

Mark,

If you've actually got sites linking to you, then it does work

Look at this for an example: link:a4uforum.co.uk on Google.com

Cheers,

Chris
