    Hi,

I'm having problems with my present host.

Can anyone recommend a UK hosting company for a datafeed-based site? I'd need a host which has cPanel (with Fantastico or equivalent), as my datafeed is fed into a series of posts on a Wordpress blog, administered by a WP plugin. The posting is done automatically by a cron job.

So I'd need a host which offers support for cron jobs within that Wordpress blog. My present host provides support for everything but the cron job, which is daft because it means that all aspects are supported except the cron job which means that it doesn't work.

    Thanks,
    GSG

    Hi GSG,

I've had a brief chat with our support guys who know about these things and cron on a shared hosting is probably a problem due to potential security issues. A dedicated server with us would enable you to do what you need to do in CPanel if you have the budget - and we offer a wide range of specs to suit your site and traffic.

Let me know if that is any help for you.

    cheers

    Chris

    Hello there!

When you say "datafeed-based site" are we talking about 5-10 posts per day or hundreds per minute? Hypothetical numbers of course.

I ask because we host a number of similar sites and while one is perfectly fine on a shared server, another requires a cluster of servers due to MySQL (and other) complexities that arise about with larger feeds.

Cron jobs themselves are quite common and you will find that most web hosting companies (especially those who use a control panel) offer this functionality as standard.

Hopefully I'll be able to give you some more guidance

Nothing that would overburden a shared server; I would say one an hour. The plugin I use actually allows up to a frequency of one every 5 minutes, though Hostgator (for example) has a maximum of once every 15 minutes on one of their Baby Croc accounts.

So I wouldn't stretch it over once an hour - if only because it might raise a red flag with the search engines. And I would have to see what the ROI was before committing myself to a dedicated server, but certainly haven't ruled that out in the long term.

I'd be happy to go with Hostgator, as my experience of them has been very positive and their support is quick and second to none. But their servers are in the US. From an SEO point of view I'm not sure how that would be having sites catering to a UK market based in the US. They were thinking of having a UK base at one stage but no more. Very annoying.

I suppose what I'm really looking for is a UK equivalent of Hostgator. Does it exist?

For some sites I use wordpress with my own plugins, wprobot and digitalquill plugins, all of which require the use of the WP pseudo-cron (any host that isn't free should provide that capability).

I host these types of sites on UK2.net and some on tsohost.co.uk and they all auto-populate from the plugins, I would recommend tsohost.co.uk over UK2.net

That's interesting, Scriptmonkey. You mention that you use UK2, but they're the host that I've been having the problems with because they don't offer cron support. So as soon as the posting stops for the reason that cron is playing up (and it always is the cron job) I send off a quick support ticket, but I know the outcome already. I get a reply back saying they just don't support cron.

So the whole thing just stops working because there's no cron support.

So effectively I'm trying to find an alternative to UK2 (who otherwise are quite good) which provides cron support.

But I'll certainly have a look at Tsohost as well, so thanks for that.

No sure why needing to set a simple cron job to run would require a dedicated server.

If your web host doesn't support cron jobs the only thing you can do is move to a provider that does. It won't be too hard to find a host that supports cron jobs because it is a fairly standard feature.

I can offer you a professional web hosting account with cPanel, Softaculous (1 click installs including Wordpress) and daily account backups for just $3.99/month. If this is of interest to you please check out the link below to order:

Agreed. Support for crons should come as standard on any Linux based shared hosting account.
