If you are an online business owner like me and follow the contents of this forum regularly then you must have an idea about secured web hosting platforms. Needless to say, the complexities of the Internet is increasing with time and running an online business is not as simple as it used to be earlier. As a business owner you need to pick the most suitable web hosting solution. From my experience I would say that choosing a web hosting service provider that offers a robust Virtual Private server app is the best decision you can take.

Just to add if you are running PHP scripts you may wish to use litespeed servers as it delivers PHP scripts a lot lot faster.

I have a few VPS servers HIGHLY protected. Because the whole server is yours it means you can secure it a lot better, I use cPanel/WHM but unlike other servers the only publiclly accessible port is Port 80. If I want to login to cPanel or upload something I simply whitelist my IP address in the firewall itself, so no one apart from me can upload stuff/login to anything.

Along with that I run ConfigServer Expliot Scanner and SuPHP with SuEXEC for maximum protection, directory listings are prevented. I'm pretty sure my server is near bulletproof even if they do get into one site they cannot get into any other.

The problem I forsee with a VPS is that you've still got the underlying server running numerous peoples' virtual servers and thus at least in theory it would be possible for someone to alter things low down and compromise everyones' data.

Blocking everything but port 80 on a firewall sounds a good idea, although be careful running things like Wordpress, PHPBB etc. as the latter for example had a security hole allowing it to run third party code at one time - caused havok.

Definitely more secure than a straight hosted account and less likely to have server overload problems.

As for Liteserver - not heard of that one before, but looking at the pricing I think we'll stick with Apache and add more servers if necessary - much cheaper than buying licences for that.

I do agree with your comment... thats the reason Dedicated server still stands ahead of VPS server.

If you have sites that are making money, use a dedicated server, not from cheap unheard of web host. Go for a decent one otherwise face the pain of cheap hardware and downtime.

I have seen a lot of people shying away from Linux because they think it is not as user friendly as windows. However, the ground reality is that more and more people are choosing the Linux virtual server model for their web hosting needs. The main reasons for this are the flexibility and rock solid security that you can get from Linux kernel. In the long run it also turns out to be more cost effective than other VPS solutions.

Lightspeed server is indeed good.. The only draw back is, you cannot host adult websites on server with Lightspeed web server. Nginx is another good alternative for fast webservers.

And moreover both web servers work perfect on a VPS to make it more fast!

A Virtual Private Server usually referred as the VPS is one of the widely preferred solutions in the web hosting industry, where most small and medium sized businesses choose to host their online businesses over this platform. This is basically because of the root access and low cost nature of these packages. Moreover, tbh. it would be unjust and decisive to state that it is suitable for every business website running over the web. It largely depends on the kind of requirements a website has. Requirements such as the expected level of security, space, bandwidth, privacy etc.
If you do with to opt for a vitualized server, one can better try a Cloud Hosting solution. This type of hosting is based on a Virtual platform but has a lot more benefits to offer to the users. And the biggest of all is its quality of Scalability and 100% uptime.

Having said that, I would like to know your requirements for hosting, so that a suitable solution can be suggested.
