Best order to transfer domain and hosting

I have bought a domain and hosting with a company I wish to trasnfer both from (they are awful!).

I would like to transfer the .co.uk domain domain to 123reg and the hosting to my new resellers account.

I was wondering what the best way of transfering this with minimal down time?

I thought that I should trasnfer the domain first (assuming this will automativally continue to point to the old Name Servers) followed by pointing them to the new servers?

Am I correct in thinking the domain will retian pointing to the same Name Servers when transfered?

you keep your old host...you setup a mirror on the new host..... you switch the tag to 123reg..when they have the tag and you have control of the dns you switch nameservers to your new host...once dns has taken you close down your old host....
