One thing I would suggest is to keep your domains and hosting seperate, so that YOU remain in control of your web presence and not your webhost. That looks like a very good offer, but remember to add the £9.99 setup fee and VAT for that matter.

They are not UK based but www.ace-host.net are very good. I've used them for 2 years now.
Domains try here. Simple to trasnsfer DNS (Unlike 1&1)

  1 & 1 Domains

Don't 1 & 1 allow the DNS to be changed now or is that just with new packages?

webhosting - I've been looking high & low at all the different offers for the last couple months.

I still recommend the lycos (UK) business package at £8.99 a month or Hostroute (UK) pakage - you get 5 domains each with 500mb of space for £9.99 a month for the lot (last time I looked)comes uder the multi-domain/reseller package page, so you can always sell a couple off then as a reseller if you don't want them all.

As a newbie and not very web-literate person may I add a related question to this thread?

I too am looking for a hosting/web-build solution.

Have looked briefly at 123 and Lycos. Beamhost also appears to have favourable recs. but with a different approach.

Lycos looks cost-effective and in packages above 'Simple' comes with some useful looking software. (Considering their Business Package).

Alternatively would a superior website be created using say Dreamweaver and an independent host?

Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Murdo

Bought quite a few domians using 123reg - no complaints.

Then paid approx £80 for hosting of one domain.Within days it turned out they could not handle something ( think it was PHP or MySQL - hey I'm no techie ). Would not give a refund & would not allow us to change a domain name that did not require the coding (or whatever).

My brief experience with 123reg is - feck em!

We switched to a host recommended in another thread ( UKhosting ???? reseller account ) no problems so far.

P.S. welcome to the forum Macme - I'll leave your questions to the more experienced on the forum.

Greetings Murdo.

Are you familiar with HTML code and creating web sites? If not, I'd personally recommend Microsoft Frontpage which is a very easy point and click tool for creating web sites.

Otherwise, if you feel more advanced Dreamweaver may be an option however I will note that this application is designed for the power user.

Once you have created your web site locally along with all the files, images and content can you upload everything to your web space by FTP using an FTP program or if using Frontpage make sure your host provides Frontpage Extensions (other hosting providers charge £25 a year extra for this).

For a comparison on the companies you mention:

123REG STARTER PRO
- 500 Megabytes storage
- 5 Gigabytes data transfer
- 35 email accounts
- Frontpage Ext. £25/year extra
£3.99 per month + £9.99 setup
INITIAL TOTAL: £57.87 annual
RECURRING: £47.88 annual

LYCOS BUSINESS
- 1,500 Megabytes storage
- 15 Gigabytes data transfer
- 500 email accounts
- FREE Frontpage Ext.
- FREE £300 software included
£8.99 per month + £9.99 setup
INITIAL TOTAL: £117.87 annual
RECURRING: £107.88 annual

BEAMHOST BUSINESS
- 2,000 Megabytes storage
- 20 Gigabytes data transfer
- 500 email accounts
- FREE Frontpage Ext.
- FREE £49.99 software pack
- FREE £50 google adwords
£2.99 trial, then £9.99 + FREE setup
(cancel anytime, even within trial)
INITIAL TOTAL: £2.99 trial month
RECURRING: £59.94 semiannual

Obvisouly the choice is yours, however may I ask why you feel beamhost has a different approach from the others? This is a very interesting point and I'd very much appreciate the chance to better our service.

Thank you.

Thanks for the welcome justnosey.

And particular thanks to Charlie (.net) for the information.

Hi Charlie,

I am certainly not a power user - so the simpler the better with my current level of knowledge.

I am familiar with some basic HTML tags (bold, italic, font sizing etc.) but not sufficiently so to attempt any designing at even a rudimentary level.

In fact the depth of my ignorance is substantial!

Having been involved in editing and publishing I was a QuarkXpress power user and am familiar with Photoshop and Illustrator, but have never built a website.

I had a quick look at your site and will return for a more detailed study.

The basis for me thinking BEAMHOST had a slightly different approach was your previous post on this thread, but I may well have misinterpreted it:

"One thing I would suggest is to keep your domains and hosting seperate, so that YOU remain in control of your web presence and not your webhost."

I will go off and do some research but may well be back to pick your brains some more.

Many thanks for your response.

Regards, Murdo

Just for info. All new beamhost accounts are created on servers based in Dallas USA according to there sales team. So no good if you need UK hosting.
