used to go for hyphenated but now go for brand building type domains either with abstract names (like firebox) or if possible semi relevant words (like figleaves). Shorter the better (like ASOS).
Do people here go for SEO friendly domains here like broadband-uk.co.uk or do they go for more memorable names like broadbandsuppliers.co.uk?
I go for hyphenated domains but sometimes wonder if its really a good idea...

have you found as a result that you get a better repeat visitor rate now?
I don't really know how much the URL contributes to ranking anyway... so I think maybe I should change.

To some extent but also on click rate
Imaging you searched for gadgets
Which of these would you click on first assuming they all has the same sort of title and description?
#1 www.gadgets-gadget-gifts.co.uk
#2 www.newtech.co.uk
#3 www.wizio.co.uk
We can argue about the merits of #2 v #3 (Im not sure which I prefer) but would you really click on #1?
I tend to go for desciptive names, where the clue to what the stie offers is in the name lol rather than abstract or hypenated ones, altho I do have some hyphenated ones where I own the unhypenated version

brand building type domains
---------------------------------------------
I always go for a descriptive domain, unless its a project i,m planning to develop and spend alot of time on, even then I always try to get the description of the product or service as well.
To me registering something brandable always means more time and money to build the brand and memorability.
Getting a descriptive equals less time and money imo.
Hypenated domains I consider on the terms, seo friendly debatable these days?

Yeah, I agree.used to go for hyphenated but now go for brand building type domains either with abstract names (like firebox) or if possible semi relevant words (like figleaves). Shorter the better (like ASOS).
In the long-term these memorable (shorter) domain names are gonna
be better.
I tend to go for unhyphenated one for the domain name, but any relevant - ones, I simply park on the same domain.
This is why I have just been to buy 1 .co.uk domain name for 2 years, and some others found their way into my basket..... hence a final bill of £129 !!!
My main problem is that I buy them with good intentions, but never have the time to develop them further than a rough pencil/paper sketch - usually on the back of domain register piece of paper!![]()
One good reason to use a domain that is descriptive is that when people link to you the link text they use is usually your domain name.
So if you sold widgets and had a site called 'buy-widgets.co.uk' you would have sites linking to you using the text 'Buy-Widgets.co.uk'. Google would then rank your site higher for searches for widgets, as the text sites use to link to a page is important.
I go for generic wherever possible. I don't mind hyphens as long as they're not simply separating keywords, but forming a keyphrase.
For example, I registered local-area-network.com (not doing anything with it yet) because it's a well-known expression, but I would never e.g. have regged network-networks-networking.com

Just registered virtual-private-server.co.uk and virtual-private-servers.co.uk, would these be useful for SEO? Has anyone experience with getting good placement for keyword domain names?
