  transfer domain costs?

Ive registered a domain name with a cheap company thinking I can transfer the IPS TAG to my hosting company for no cost. I havent registered many domains before but the ones I have registered with havent cost anything to change the IPS TAG. The domain name cost me £5 and now they want to charge me £10 to change the IPS TAG. I cant find anything in their terms and conditions that say this fee is chargable and I was wondering if anybody knows whether this is normally a a free service or am I being trapped into hidden fees with a dodgy company?

Maybe I should register domains with my hosting company from now on? Its not much to whinge about with one domain name but I dont want to get caught out as I register more.

Can anyone help me with some advise?

Hi,

I'm no expert but why do you need to transfer the IPS Tag
at all - just point the DNS entries to your new host?

That's what I do when I register my .co.uk domains at
http://www.freeparking.co.uk
By the way, neither Freeparking nor any of the domain registers/hosts
I've used have ever charged me to transfer the IPS Tag.

==Aside==
What annoys me about this sort of thing is that some
web hosts ask you to transfer the IPS Tag over to you
when there really is no need. First time this ever happened
to me - Nildram - they even charged me a quarterly fee
for 'hosting' this IPS Tag.

They made money from me in the short run, but I'll
never use them again!
==Aside==

Steve

Hi Steve

Transfering the domain to another TAG is a quite a simple task for any domain company. But any company is quite within their rights to charge a Transfer Out or Transfer In fee.

123-reg charge a £4.99 +vat fee to transfer in a .uk but nothing to transfer out.

Freeparking as Idunno mentioned is Free both ways

1&1 are quite simply a pain to transfer out and for this reason ive never used them (I regged one domain with them, never again). They also charge to transfer in (as little as £1.99 per annum)

You sometimes can use simple DNS to connect your domain names to hosting. And there is no need to have the TAG changed to suit your hosting company.

So in a knut shell, you haven't been conned. You just have to be aware and like anything you learn more as you go along.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards

Andrew

Agree, I will never have any dealing with 1&1 again. Charges ok I can accept that but I had to send them written and signed letters by snail just to transfer a domain out. This was when they had an office couple of roads down from my house... still took 2 weeks to move my domain away.

i have some domain names with 1&1, I still have no problem with them. However, I do agree about their service is not fast as other company.

They want to charge me £10 for that too... it seems Ive been tricked to buy a cheap domain name and the end result is I should of used my current hosting company for a couple of £'s extra. That will teach me for being a cheapskate! Ive also learnt who not to register or host with ever again. I find it humourous that company's run their business this way... if they looked after me I would be a repeat customer and they'd earn 10 times more out of me during the year, possibly transfer my hosting if my current one has more down time.

anyway, Ive coughed up now

To be honest, I don't see anything wrong with ISP's charging a transfer out fee. I would guess that this particular hosting company was subsidising the cost of the domain, with potential hosting income. (£5 is pretty cheap). If you want to transfer out, then you are not really wanting the hosting, and so they are making a loss on each domain that's registered.

I register my domains through a company which charges 10 quid (still cheap but slightly more). They don't charge a transfer out fee, nor for pointing the domain at my hosts servers. I would guess this means they are making a slight profit on each domain, and therefore can afford to provide greater functionality.

To me, its a bit similar to mobile phones.... you wouldn't expect to get the latest handset for free and then be allowed to cancel your contract, and move to another network for free.

In your case though, undoubtedly, it would have been much better if any costs were clearly stated in the terms and conditions, to avoid your problem.
