Looking after your own server is not something that you can learn from a tutorial although there are plenty of good helpful websites out there to help you.
A managed server will have security updates etc but don't get drawn into a false sense of security as they won't perform administration tasks without additional charges.
A managed server will have its OS, kernel and associated software updated. If your server suffers hardware failure, they will replace the equipment for you. Generally, their support technicians will assist you with anything related to the areas covered in the support contract, such as OS configuration and troubleshooting but they won't support nor install third party software such as a firewall or virus scanners.
For the everyday tasks that a server requires, you will also need to hire an admin until you feel you have enough skills to do it yourself.
I could go on all day about the type of server, the right datacentre, your usage and how it affects the server performance and cost implications, but this is something that you need to think through yourself.
Its certainly easier and cheaper with a few reseller accounts but at the end of the day, its a natural progression to move onto your own server, just research it before you decide.
