How do you keep a back up copy of your website? on an update or daily basis? I forgot about a website, I tried changing the credit card to another a few months back, but they wouldn't let me, they said I'd have to wait until the next payment was due, gave them a new e-mail address to contact me as well.

However, I'd forgotten about it, in the meantime they never e-mailed me on the new e-mail and have since completely deleted one of my websites, I don't think I have a copy, will have a look on the old pc but pretty sure that's wiped.

So due to my forgetfulness and their mismanagement I've lost unique content. How can I ensure this doesn't happen again? do I rely on online systems? or do I download every website to a spare personal server at home everynight?

I've suggested to the company I was previously associated with, that they may wish to contemplate saving websites that expire payment wise, on disc for a year and to return said website the owner would pay a fee, unique content is worth something to those that develop it, why they don't do this I don't know, it seems an obvious revenue stream for very little work and space.

How do you back up all your sites and ensure you don't lose your unique content? I am angry, at myself obviously but also angry at the company for what they've allowed to happen.

PS: They didn't even have the decency to effin write (that old way of contacting a person) and do all possible to keep me as a customer and my website intact.

To retrieve unique contents (in terms of tex) try:-

    http://web.archive.org/web/*/www.yourwebsiteurl.co.uk

they may have indexed and archived your site text, unfortunately no graphics.

Thanks I tried that, but the website never really went live, it was a work in progress, one summer I went all out developing the idea and then something else came up and I just carried on paying the monthly hosting fee then when I tried changing credit details, which they wouldn't allow me to do on the spot, that's when it all went wrong.

I could sue as they didn't do all in their power to contact me but then it's my fault as well for being busy and forgetting. I'd probably still have a copy if I hadn't wiped the old pc. The good thing is it's my own idea and I'm sure when I'm in the mood again I can brainstorm and come up with something much better and will. Being optimistic all that...

The thing that annoys me most is I changed e-mail, they confirmed it, but their system shows me having to call them, they have my address, phone number and a different e-mail on the domain name, I know it's my fault but they aint helped whatsoever. Deal with them again? no chance.

Is there an automated way of backing up websites? i.e. not relying on the hosting companies. I'm an idiot, always make more work for myself some way or another.

Did you not have a copy on your hard drive?

I aim to do a back up on dvd every week but I do that from my hard drive not from my server.
