  Dedicated Servers

I know I and others have asked this before, but.....

Im looking for dedicated servers, reasonable price, good spec etc. UK based.

Ive been playing on a friends 1&1 servers and they seem to be OK. Any opinions on them.

Basically i have loads of websites coming up, all needing hosting and id rather manage the hosting.

Kind regards andy

1&1 servers are in Germany. Lots of folks complain about their support, but if you go for an unmanaged server then wont matter. Their network uptime is ok. which would be the only issue really on an unmanaged server.

Ive had servers with Dedipower and poundhost. Poundhost did have numerous network problems while I was there.

I don't know your capabilities so forgive me when I say that you may be better off with a reseller account or VPS. Hosting and server management are separate entities with server management being the most important at times. Depending on the skills of the admin will prevent things like your server being used to orchestrate a DoS attack or used to mass mail viagra offers.

With that said, there are plenty of server providers about both in the US and UK. Prices in the UK are coming down gradually but don't go with the cheapest but don't line someone else's pockets either by paying silly prices such as those being charged a few years ago.

TBH server management isnt all that complicated. If your using Linux just run up2date, put a firewall up and secure your email, if your on Windows then same thing but run Windows Update.. really not much more then securing your home PC.

I think you get what you pay for.

If you need quick response and knowledgeable staff then I have found dedicated-servers (now taken over by Pipex) to be good although expensive. 247 telephone support. Unlimited bandwidth. Start at £100 a month. Offering free firewall at the moment.

I've tried US servers but the speed difference is noticeable expecially when running heavy scripts. Also tried shared hosting - would never go back to that!! I had an old RAQ3 until recently for a few older sites and it was MUCH faster then shared hosting.

I'm running P4 systems and they seem OK but just in the process of switching to Duel Zeon 2GB systems.

Donhost come recommended. Also now part of the Pipex group.

1&1 - not tried but mixed comments on them on various forums.

Hi guys, just a quickie - people can also post their recommendations in the Affiliate Resource Centre' - designed for exactly this purpose.

http://www.a4uforum.co.uk/arc/

You can enter a resource and review / rate it.. in time people will know the ones that are respected and those which are to be avoided.

I use dedipower for one server - very good normally - though would consider rackspace if you have the cash - very similar - 1&1 - well, i'd avoid like the plague personally.

Cheers,
Matt.

thanks for the replies guys,

Lots to think about, I have heard bad things about 1&1 so will probably avoid them, I keep checking out companies and hopefully will decide
(1 day ).

I did have a lot of fun with plesk on the 1and1 server setting up accounts for a friend, is cpanel better or would you go for plesk?

regards andy

p.s. the main reason im looking for hosting is between me and half a dozen of our customers we spending £50+ a month on hosting and to combine and run our own servers makes sense (to me anyway) Ideally we are looking for 100gb bandwidth a month and most are simple static sites, a couple are php/sql sites but nothing to intensive.

got to agree 110% - there technical support is about as good as a chocolate fire guard

We use openhosting They are competitavely priced and use some of the best hardware available. There forums are full of praise and the helm control panel is the best hosting interface around IMO
