  dedicated hosting

okay so I get that hosting a website you have a server with all your stuff on somewhere, shared means theres lots of other people using it too, dedicated its yours? So obviously better id guess

basically now I have that many shared accounts its costing a small fortune (yes really small) but just wondered if im going to be better off with a dedicated server? Would I be right in thinking with a dedicated server id be able to host as many sites on it as I want? taking into account disk space and all that

thing thats annoying me at the moment if if I want to set up a 1 page landing page on an ew domain I have ot use up another of my accounts. Its one page... and I have to set up and use a whole account on it with like 500 meg disk space and 10 gig limit. So im thinking dedicated server, as the 1 page sites are small I can just set up loads, move my bigger sites there too and all should be fine for at least next year?

What sort of prices should I be expected to pay? I think ill want managed as I know naff all about hosting/server/dns/nameservers. Dont want anything too special as I wont need it but dont want to go dirt cheap either.

If anyone with any better understanding of this could point me in the right direction or offer some words of wisdom that'd be just great ta

help much received and happy new year

Most dedicated server hosts provider their servers pre-configured with a mass virtual hosting control panel such as Plesk, cPanel or (and less straight forward) Webmin. If you're a novice to dedicated servers look for a package offering one of the first two.

You will have access the control panel on a special port number on the IP address of your box; for example http://your_ip_address:12345

Then, setting up a new site is as simple as entering the domain name, choosing an FTP username and password and hitting GO. Each account that you create will to all intents and purposes look exactly like any standard shared hosting account you've been buying already.

You would need to ensure that DNS for the domain name is configured to point to the IP address of your dedicated box; but with some hosts even that is taken care of if you also register the domain name through them (this is how 1&1 do it, although there's still nothing stopping you registering a domain name elsewhere).

Hope this helps!

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but I too am looking for managed dedicated hosting, after having a very bad experience with my existing provider.

I need ASP and MySQL, a rare combination it seems. Any help apreciated.

A reseller/multidomain hosting package maybe more suitable, than a dedicated server.

It still means you are sharing a server with other websites, but you can add your own domains at no extra cost. If you manage to get a good reseller package, you can allocate space and bandwidth for each of yor sites.

I would have thought that a re-seller package is the way to go. Heart Internet are pretty good - I have about 20 or so domains with them and a number of gig's of storage but they have yet to complain

Have a look at amenworld - they have dedicated servers for not much more than other people charge for reseller packages - I've only been with them about a month now but found them to be really good - server is fast and support is good - they even have real people at the end of the phone...

Take a look at:

http://www.rackspace.co.uk/

They aren't the cheapest, but they are good, particularly for phone support. For dedicated hosting that is probably slightly cheaper, consider:

http://www.catalyst2.com

a smaller outfit in Northern Ireland run by Paul Redpath. Tell him Navito.co.uk sent you

Morley

If you're considering a reseller account, then http://www.catalyst2.com may be worth your consideration. Host 50 domains for £293.75 inc VAT, would that save you any money?

All the best

hi sorry went away, yes it would! im currently paying about £19 a month for 20 reseller accounts and got 2 of them on the go. so about £456 a year

going to look into this more in new year see if its going to be better to just keep with reseller accounts or what cheers for the help so far though.

just looked at amenworld and looks good, but ive used plesk before and much prefer cpanel so would want cpanel.

accelerator just looked at the package your quoting a price for, I like how they dont give yo ua set number of doamins or accoutns to use just so much disk space and transfer. but as I am at the moment each account gets 10 gig transfer and 500 megs of storage, and its the fact that a few of my sites are currently down due to using the bandwidth is whats prompted me to look into this, so sticking them all on one of these probably wouldnt be the best idea, they'd only be online ofr the first week or so of each month!

if anyone else has any recomendations or words of wisdom be good to hear them, like i said no decisions going to be made overnight as moving everythings gona be a right arse and want to get something decent

I have a reseller plan with www.donhost.co.uk (£39 per month) and you can set-up unlimited hosting plans. Bandwidth is where they tight and they don’t let you have root access but it’s Ok for most sites. Got a dedicated server with Enta.net for all the big stuff.

I thought that now Donhost has been bought by Pipex, they offered 'unlimited' bandwidth...
