I am using a server side include which holds the links in my footer. It saves on coding and I can make one change to the .shtm file, rather than changing each page individually.

My question is whether a spider, such as the Googlebot is capable of reading the contents of a .shtm file?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    I use a similar technique.

I use the shtml includes to edit text on my .html files. This makes it more simple to update etc....

Google has had no problem indexing and reading the text on my pages and therefore I think that google can read the text that the shtml file creates. It doesnt technically read the shtml file though.

    yup, easy

google just reads what you see in your browser when the page laods, all the server side stuff is done before that so google doesnt even know its happening, google just thinks what it sees is the end result, well it is the end result, and indexes that.
