what is the difference between local and not local server

Hi..

i wonder if it is an advantage to use local server to host our website rather than outside india.

because my office has wide contact in asia and europe we rely on email communications. is it an advantage to use non-local server to host web/email hosting when my office is in india ?

Or is it better to go for company which have local and non-local server to host ?

Please advise. an early reply is really appreciated .

warm regards.

Well if the bulk of your visitors are from say the UK then it makes sense to have a server in the UK for responce times. Only advantage to having a server at your physical location is you can spray some Mr sheen on it and give it a clean once a week. (or even repair it if it falls over)

Or brag about it as one of my clients does - everytime I visit their offices they show me their new toys - all because I let on that I had an "interest" in web-design/IT etc.

To me, one server looks much like another!

Hi,
Local webservers have faster ping times, however in most instances it's
barely noticeable. Most important is whether the webserver is
overloaded or connection oversold. You can get a local webserver but if it's
over-worked to it's limits it will still get slowed.

It really depends on what your going to use the server for, if its gaming or real time information a local sever is highly recommended, otherwise you can get a server anywhere, but the further you go the higher the ping rate will be.

"or brag about it as one of my clients does"

Best ones are them that have to have the dear kit without even knowing why..

two recruitment companies in my office block have bought their own servers.. they've paid like £6k each for them including a recruitment database management package.

all for about 100 hits a day on one site and the other dude hasn't even got a site live, he's just using it to manage staff/potential staff data ..

but you can't tell them they could have saved like £5.5k .. oh no.. they "need" an in house server.. they can't explain why .. but they just know they need one in house lol..

The main advantage of hosting in your own country is most likely to be support availability, basically the host is open when you are and there's more technical support at the datacenter during the day.

One thing you may want to consider if you don't have it already is a backup to your email service, otherwise known as Backup MX. You can have several layers of backup settings for just in case your main host server is down; all emails will be sent to the next mail server. Ask your host about this.
