Can you recommend a good hosting company?

Where is your target audience located, this will determine where your hosts servers should be? There are quite a few UK hosts who only have US based servers which is no good if you require a fast website response for UK visitors.

have you thought about a vps?
I host many sites and a few reseller accounts on a vps from a2b2.com
(256Mb 30GB Disk 300GB Transfer with cpanel/WHM approx £24 + VAT p/m[semi-managed]) ~will upgrade to dedicated later this year.

I've used 1&1 for my UK sites for a while (servers are actually based in Germany though). No major issues, particularly when you take the price into consideration

In the US I use Bluehost who have been great, top notch technical support at all hours.

Guys - thanks for the responses. I have one site that needs UK based machines and I've used netpivotal and active23 in the past but I can't really give them much of a recommendation.

You could also try amenworld.com, they have absolutley fantastic support

for US servers I use rochenhost.com (premium reseller). My server is at the Planet in Dallas. Uptime here http://uptime.alertra.com/uptime.php...893&id1=639651

No complaints - been excellent (2 years)

I've used 34sp.com for a couple of years, with no problems at all. My experience of their technical support has always been positive - every email to them has had a courteous, helpful reply from a human within 24 hours, including over a bank holiday weekend.
Their servers are in Manchester, so suitable for UK-oriented sites.

More info - I'm using a single (large) mySQL database with a typical HTML/PHP front end. Each user will be doing simple queries every few minutes, but there will be a high volume of users. Does anyone have a similar website, and who do you use for hosting?

We have used Zen Hosting for countless years and always found the service to be excellent, and above all, reliable. They may not be the cheapest, but feel they are the best, but thats down to your budget i guess.
