123 reg - Domain Transfer Question

How long does it usually take to transfer a domain to 123reg?
I have had a domain in "Transfer in progress..." status for the past 2 days.
This seem a little bit of a long time.

Re: 123 reg - Domain Transfer Question

I did a few .com/net transfers to them last year and they sat in limbo for a while - 2 or 3 days. Is this to do with them using Tucows/OpenSRS that it takes so long for names to appear in the 123 control panel?

During those few days the WHOIS at http://resellers.tucows.com/whois showed that the registrar had already changed to them and it was just a question of waiting it out.

It should not take more than 24-48 hours though. 123-Reg had problems in the past and still going on I guess.

From which registrar you are transferring the domain to 123reg ? Had 123reg initiated the transfer request b'coz the transfer process usually takes no more than 24 - 48Hrs.

Re: 123 reg - Domain Transfer Question

All domain name transfers take at least 72 hours to become visible throughout the world. This is because all servers do their DNS update at different times of the day (once in 24 hours usually). More frequent updates, or all updates being done at the same time would cause the controlling domain servers to crash with the overload. When the transfer becomes visible to you therefore depends entirely on where you are receiving your DNS information from and when they did their last update. So it is quite possible that your next door neighbour for instance, could see your reconciled website before you do.
Kathy

PS I have had problems in the past with 123Reg initiating a transfer request when moving a customer's domain to another registrar but as you are moving the other way this isn't really applicable. Once the transfer is in progress it is up to the DNS servers to register the change.

Re: 123 reg - Domain Transfer Question

I've recently changed the nameservers and transfers OUT of 123reg and they've always been done with 24 hours.

Last time I transfered something in (good 2 years ago now) it took a good 3-4 days.

Not for 123. In previous post when I mentioned 2-3 days that wasn't the total time, those times are on top of the 5 days that initiating transfer request, inputting the Auth code and doing the OpenSRS confirmation had taken. One took over a week in total and for almost three days I didn't have it in a control panel anywhere. It was an important domain and I was panicking, even though I could see the registrar had changed and a year been added, but it did drop into the 123 cp eventually. Transferring names in to 123 took the longest by far out of those I have experienced.

BTW. Domains resolving was not an issue for me. The names continued to resolve correctly throughout as they had off-Pipex hosting and the nameservers were staying the same.

Re: 123 reg - Domain Transfer Question

For .com domains the old registrar used to have 7 days to release it and most seemed to take exactly 7 days to do this after the transfer was authorised. Not sure if it was a security thing, but it's always a bit of a pain. Not sure if the same applies with EPP keys now.

This is independent of the DNS updates (24 - 72 hours bit) but if it's hosted in the same place then that won't be a worry. If it's moving then you'll need to update the DNS servers for the domain once it's transfered (won't let you while transfer is in progress).

Nothing ever simple...
