Re: Which host for a Dedicated Server?

Another downside of 1&1 is that their servers (or at least the ones I use) are based in Germany and as such doesn't help with seo.

EUK & Names seem to be near the top of the list at the moment.

Re: Which host for a Dedicated Server?

There's another thread from a few months back where I seem to remember that Clook and Meirhosting came out OK.

Rackspace customers are always overjoyed with them, but it comes at a price.

The other one we use is Pipeten who have done a good job of monitoring & responding to problems with some e-commerce clients we have with them on MS kit.

Re: Which host for a Dedicated Server?

We use donhost for one of our servers and it's ok but for anything outside what their packages provide you will pay through the nose for it, for example if you needed something extra installed on it even though it's a managed service they will charge you £50 per hour (min hours work)

For our other server we use SoftLayer Technologies, Inc. who I have to admit are fantastic and for the price we pay we have got one hell of a beefy server. only downside is that it's not a managed server so we have to spend out on a managment company to look after it.

Re: Which host for a Dedicated Server?

The 2 hosts I would recommend are ovh.co.uk (choice of UK and EU IP addresses) and bytemark.co.uk. Neither give a 100% managed option.

I personally find the 'out of the box' at ovh is not user friendly as they have a very restricted install of webmin. Now that the site is up and running, that is no longer a problem.

At bytemark, you set it up yourself (or ask someone to set it up for you, which is my preferred option). They are a small company so you get personal service. If you go with bytemark, I know someone who would be happy to be mentioned as a referrer, so please PM me for details.

Managed Server does not include any charges for installing any 3rd party software. This is all inclusive in managed solution along with security updates , monitoring etc. You can have a look at our server management overview at UK Linux Dedicated Server Management to see what are the things involved in managed server.
