Which host for a Dedicated Server?

I'm looking for a dedicated server package and need your help & thoughts pls?

The following package (Business Server 1) from 1&1 looks ok but am I missing something?

Note - expected traffic is <5,000 uv per day (not sure on downloads/bandwidth).

1&1 Internet Ltd.*-*Servers*-*Managed Server

CPU: Single Core AMD Athlon 64 - if I was buying a PC I'd be looking for Core 2 Duo, is it different with web hosting servers or do I need more?

RAM: 1GB - again, my new laptop has 4GB, is 1GB enough?

PRICE: £50 per month (after the intro offer) looks to be the norm at this level.

Re: Which host for a Dedicated Server?

Thought I would throw my thoughts in. Last year I had a need for a VPS and 1&1 looked like they fit the bill. However it took 3 working days for the sales team to get back to me to an email. With 5000 UV a day I would say the processor is not too important. What is important is uptime and speed of support when it goes wrong and RAM(1gb should be sufficient). I didnt want to risk the fact that they took 3 days for a sales enquiry - what would support be like. Having said that they are offering a good deal and is worth dropping them a line.

I would check on the 100mb connection. My server here is connected to a 1gb network but the gateway is not. Might be me being cynical but marketing words could be hiding the real truth. I'd check.

At my last company our web server cost us approx £800 pm - that included a mssql license but more importantly 24/7 monitoring and personal support (not a call centre and direct to a technician who knew the server and how to get things back online). At the time 1 hour offline made £800 seem insignificant.

I've also paid this before - but for a client!
I'm not earning £800 an hour so I'm thinking £800 pm is expensive for me at present.
I accept the point though and I'm grateful for your comments.

One major thing to check, which people often don't, is the price if you go over your bandwidth allowance.

I know a lot of people who've been hit by big bills for going over at Christmas. A lot of companies charge £25 - £30 per GB, which is ridiculous as BT charge me 30p per Gb if I go over my allowance at home, and my server in the US only costs 25p per Gb for going over the allowed limit.

I know both Pipex and 1 and 1 are very expensive for this.

Nice spot tbp - I've just checked and 1&1 are £50 per GB .. back to the drawing board.

Edit - Names.co.uk charge 2p/MB.

It all depends on what you wish to host on that server. Yes, Core 2 Duo or Xeon processors are much better than AMD processors. If you thinking for a long term perspective then core 2 duo or xeon servers would be an ideal choice. You can have a look at range of Dedicated Servers we offer Dedicated Server Hosting | Fully Managed Servers | Linux Windows SQL Servers .We have special offer for A4u members. PM me for more details.

Re: Which host for a Dedicated Server?

Just a couple of points.

1. I would avoid 1 & 1, not got any first hand experience, but I've heard bad reports.
2. If you want reliable UK based hosting and great support I would recommend Rackspace.
3. If you are on a bit more of a budget then I've used Hostgator, and apart from a few mini disasters lol they aren't all bad.
4. The 123 servers look like a decent offering. But when I sent them a support email to ask how quick they were at responding to support queries, they took 2-3 days to get back to me Lol! Speaks for itself I think. Anyone who's tried to contact 123-reg would agree I'm sure. They seem like a great company, but must be run by robots

I wouldn't judge a web host by the price necessarily, you get what you pay for in a lot of situations.

Let me know who you end up choosing.

I had an e-mail back from then saying that in reality they charge a nominal fee as they prefer you to change packages if you see the excess bandwidth carrying on going forward - fair enough.

The VPS packages on Names.co.uk look ok but they don't say what servers they use.
