Question Shared VS Reseller multiple for niche sites

When hosting multiple websites, most people opt for reseller packages because of the option to host multiple sites. But I’ve noticed that many shared hosting packages also allow multiple sites, some even unlimited. So, apart from reseller packages being generally more reliable and having more control etc, is there still any advantage to getting a reseller account instead of a shared package?

As for me personally, I’m starting out so I want to host multiple small websites which don’t require a lot of bandwidth or space.

Personal preference.

I had a Fasthosts reseller account but generally found the company unreliable, I found they constantly made changes 'behind the scenes' which rendered many features I had worked tirelessly to implement stop working.

I now use a virtual server which gives me much greater control over many many aspects of the background stuff, allows me around 30 hosted domains and costs about a third less.

For me, a reseller account should only be used by people such as web design agencies or those ACTUALLY planning to resell domain space.

I`d also recommend a VPS if you have a number of sites.

Gives you the full control of a dedicated server, but costs a lot less!

You can put as many sites as you want on it, can install any software you want, have full control over the configuration so if you want to do something non standard you can, and usually get more memory and CPU resources. I get all this for around 1/2 the cost of a standard reseller account with all it's limitations.

The only thing is if you want a good VPS (ie one without Plesk!), then you'll need to have some idea how to run a server and setup Apache and MySQL (which really isn't that hard, and there are thousands of tutorials on the net).

I'm looking to move around 20 sites I'm currently hosting with Streamline to somewhere more reliable. Has anybody used the 1&1 Business Pro package? They claim 99.99% uptime, but Streamline 'guarantee 99.9%' and it's more like 95%!

I have a dedicted server, reseller accounts and shared hosting.

Personnaly from what i understand that your requirments are I would go for a shared hosting with unlimited domains. $7 - $ 9 a month. Hostgator, dreamhost are my prefered ones. fi Hostgator Baby 600Gb diskspave and 6000 GB datatransfer (that's 6TB) $7.95 a month

Reseller account...imo only applicable if you ..resell. Why? Because almost the only difference between shared hosting and a reseller account is the option to make users and assign bandwidth and diskspace to them. You pay for that option...and in % more then needed if you only use it for yourself.

Dedicated server...If you run 100+ sites or several large large sites then it's time to move to dedicated.

I have 5 sharred hosting accounts for $7 each with each account 50+ sites and have no problems with them. I never reach the limit with the absurd amounts of diskspace and bandwidth they are giving nowadays. 5 years ago I was happy to get several MB..now we are talking about TB

Having been advised against 1&1, I'm now looking at a Linux VPS with Eukhosts. Anybody got any experience with this company?

Thanks,
Mike

Well here's an update. I've gone with a web hosting company which is £20 a year. It said on their homepage that you can host "unlimited domains" on the shared linux hosting account. I now have a second domain I am trying to set up however, the cpanel interface only lets me choose "addon domain" which basically sets up the domains as follows: http://www.domain1.com/domain2.com.

Even when typing in http://www.domain2.com it redirects to the above format.

I'm still trying to fix this problem. Obviously, what I'm looking for is for both websites to be under their own respective domain names.

I may be a bit ignorant here but it seems at the moment cheap shared hosting doesn't allow multiple separate domains and I'll have to go for a reseller or a dedicated server account. If this is true then the definition of "unlimited domains" many hosts use is misleading.

I'm still starting out as an affiliate and don't require huge bandwidth or storage space. I also want to make alot of small niche sites rather than one big one hence the reason for going with cheap shared hosting.

tbp - do you mind letting us know who you use as your host? I used Clook and their VPS packages are signifcantly more expensive then the reseller packages.
Although I supsect that Clook's is a managed VPS, where as it sounds like yours is not (which is probably ok with me..)

Sounds like you correctly set up an addon domain, however for some reason enabled redirection on the domain. Go to the addon domains page, manage redirection, then disable it!

I have had this happen to me as well. My webhost company uses cpanel. When adding an extra domain make sure you have a seperate folder for your other site. And your domain names' directory is pointing to that folder. This directory will still appear under the main domain you have setup but when typing in Welcome to whateveryourdomainis.com it should point to this folder.
