  Question Bizarre Website Issue

This has me completely stumped.

A website I've designed is showing a page can't be displayed on some people's computers. There was an issue a while ago but a DNS change on my computer solved it, but now the client is saying he can't view the site on his computer (PC/vista/ie). However, he can view it on his iphone using the same wireless internet connection.

Obviously I can't force users of the site to change their DNS so there must be another issue. All other sites we have on this reseller hosting works fine - this one domain name has given us issues for a while now.

Can you try the domain - xxxx - and let me know if it works for you?

Anyone have any ideas what this issue is and how to fix it? This is a brand new domain so it's not like it used to be owned by spammers or anything.

I can't see it here.

It's a strange one, at work here the DNS lookup for the domain is failing.

However, using domain tools on the net, the DNS is working but the IP address being returned is pointing to a server that looks like its offline.

Has the DNS been changed recently, in which case this could be a propagation issue?

One of your DNS servers can't be resolved.

ns2.thebrandsurgery.co.uk doesn't resolve to an IP so if a browser tries to use that DNS server it dies. ns1 is fine. That explains why it works sometimes and not others.

Edit: hmm, maybe too quick. Now neither of them work.

Thanks for looking.

No, the name servers have not changed since I first set it up late last year.

So why can't you see it but others can? This is the bizarre thing I don't understand, the error seems to be not dependant on ISP, DNS, browser, OS, time of day or colour of pants.

If you check it through a proxy then you'll see that it's alive and kicking.

Thanks to the others.

What is killing the ns1 and ns2 for some people but not others?

DNS Quick Check - DNS Report Tool, Test your DNS delegation, DNS Servers, Mail and Web Servers, Network Admins, Webmasters, Hosting - this site seems to think everything is tickyty-boo.

  Re: Bizarre Website Issue

Cheers guys.

I'm now at home and I can't see it on my home PC even though I have the same OS and browser (FF2).

Might some ISP's be treating the name server differently? If so, how do I know and how do I fix it?

I can see it here at home now (couldn't see it at work earlier)

I wonder whether it was just a glitch, the name server record corrupted or similar.

The only thing I can see is that the nameservers aren't authoritative for themselves.

ie According to Nominet:

Code:
 ns1.thebrandsurgery.co.uk 85.92.72.83
 ns2.thebrandsurgery.co.uk 85.92.71.221
but

Code:
dig @85.92.72.83 ns1.thebrandsurgery.co.uk

; <<>> DiG 9.3.4 <<>> @85.92.72.83 ns1.thebrandsurgery.co.uk

Has something been changed in the config for thebrandsurgery.co.uk?

The only thing I can think of for some people getting to the site and others not is if something has changed recently and we're getting different cached versions of the resu
