There aren't many real advantages really.
The main one is that they are under your control, and you can tinker with Time To Live values etc which is handy if you have to move your domain to another server for example, but most of the time you don't end up touching them.
The other is that in the WHOIS record your nameserver domains match the site domain, which looks a bit more pro, but again not many people are going to look.
It's possible if you have your own server that running your own nameserver will give quicker DNS results than your hosts, as yours will get less traffic.
In the end it doesn't really make a difference. I run my own name servers, but purely because Im a stickler for having everything under my control.
