  New site promotion

Chaps & ladies

Any advice for a confused newbie on how to create traffic to my AM site?

Will link farms kill my SEO rating (should I ever get one)?
Is there an easy way of swapping links other than begging webmasters?

I have a content rich (well trying my best) site aimed at small business owners. Google have indexed it but page rank 0 and no sign of it on the search pages. Also thinking of jumping on the band wagon with a ringtone/games site.

Do you just rely on SEO and PPC? Do classified ads work, door drops, direct mailing etc.

Will I ever be rich

I too would be interested in peoples point of view on this subject. I am very new to affiliate marketing, I launched my first AM site a couple of days ago and am unsure of how to get some traffic towards it.

I've dropped a hyperlink to it in my signature on a few forums I frequent, but response has been minimal. I've submitted the URL to Google and Yahoo, but since read that it wasn't such a good idea (apparently this can harm your sites PR?). I've also tried getting a link up on some relevent sites link pages.

The site has had a few visits it the few days its been up, but very minimal clicks on affilliate links, and zero sales.

How do all of you seasoned AM pros go about launching a new project of yours?

  Cool Hows It Going Swiss?

Nice looking site, couldn't help but take a peak at your code, must have taken ages to create ... would it have been quicker to use PHP or some kind of database for dynamic content based on the printer selection?

I am in a similar situation to you, have submitted my site and get around 20 - 30 clicks per day most seem to be from google where I have submitted my URL, also MSN. Previous posts here and elsewhere suggest that it just takes time to get a PR.

Meanwhile working on my next, hopefully better site as learnt a lot just from reading posts here ... e.g. build for right screen res!

Have played with PPC and blew my budget v quickly with non--qualified traffic using the wrong keywords.

Even thinking about good old fashioned leaflets through the letterbox to promote next site for ringtones ..... isn't technology cool!

The whole site is coded in PHP, and is almost all dynamic running off of a MySQL backend. I have just done a nice job of hiding that fact!

I will be sorting some kind of leaflet drop in the very near future too, luckely I work in an office on a rather nice sized business park, not a bad target audience for my site I dont think.

@accelerator: What advantages would running a blog bring to an AM site for example?

Hmm ... giving away some useful stuff here ... it's a free service and you can create incoming links to your site. Submit your blog url to the search engines. Link your blog to your site and vice versa.

You can also comment on other people's blogs to gain traffic.

I took a quick look at your site and my main piece of advice is to think search engine optimisation. For example, when I go to a particular page, the title tag doesn't change, so even though your site has a whole page dedicated to particular products, the search engines aren't going to realise that.

All the best

Wow, that never even crossed my mind and that really is quite important. Thanks for pointing that out, I'll get that fixed up!
EDIT: Fixed.

As for the blog thing, its an interesting idea although I don't know if I'd get around to updating regularly...

  Blog?

What I don't get is this is a catch 22 isn't it .. use a blog to drive traffic to my site sounds good but how do I get traffic to read my bog in the first place? Sorry if that is a stupid question.

I think its mainly for the inbound link, gaining traffic from it is a bonus... I think.
