Niche Bookshop

As part of my other life away from affiliate stuff I build e-commerce sites - one of these is for a customer that sells niche books/dvds etc - in particular related to Buddhism (& Tibet etc etc).

Promotion is limited currently to some bad SEO (site hopefully to be redeveloped when I will sort this) and a small Adword campaign.

What I am looking for is ideas on promotion. Other sites I work on do brilliantly with affiliate schemes but they are not so "focussed" in their content. How would a site like this go down on an affiliate scheme I wonder??

They are considering hard copy advertising in journals etc - I have by my nature shied away from such promotion in the past - but perhaps in this instance it's the way to go??

Anyone had experience / wants to voice an opinion on what might be suitable for this situation??

This sounds like a very specialised niche.
First I'd suggest looking global with the product in multiple currencies and worldwide shipping.
Second I'd look for a network which offers affiliates worldwide. I'm biased in that I'd instantly say ClixGalore as they cater to Japan, India, Asia Pacific, USA/Canada and the EU.
Third I'd also consider if the merchant is in a position to offer a franchise or drop ship globally.

They do ship globally - they do OK in the US etc. I take on board what you say about global Aff Schemes in that case - I guess there may be many more specialist sites that might want to become affiliates in the US probably than in the UK - after all it's a complete way of life I guess.

They are not really geared for drop ships etc - bit too small for that.

They did have a trade distribution arm which they lost recently - hence the need to bolster traditional b2c sales.
