  Meta Tag Considerations

Though most largest search engines do not 'spider' the keyword Meta Tags on your page, and in some cases ignore these completely, the use of Meta Tags on your page still serves an important purpose. There are literally hundreds, even thousands of smaller search engines scattered all across the Internet. Whilst the bigger engines tend to 'spider' whole pages instead and obtain their results from that, these smaller search engines don't have as much physical space to work with and must do things differently. It is in these particular engines you will find that Meta Tags are still very important.

markzz, meta data are the parameters on your page, you can put them yourself. Or if you are using some content manager to build pages, usually modern content managers give you big freedom in customizing the meta data.

And roxxy is right. Major search engines don't invest much into searching the meta. But smaller do look. Plus different applications that re-check the relevancy take meta into account too.

So, it's always good to have good meta on your site.

hi All,

two good reasons for using meta tags (meta keywords & meta content).....

the meta content tag often get's displayed in the search results, so it's a useful; place to add a snappy tag to entice potential visitors to click on your site. (although the contents of this tag has no weight regarding ranking position)

the keywords on each page should be different, so use the meta keywords tag to list the keywords which ONLY appear on the page in question. Generic keywords on the home page, more specific keywords on the product pages. Don't have the same list of meta keywords on every page as onsite search boxes use the meta keywords tag as part of it's search. So to get the best from your on site search function, use different meta keywords on every page.

Regarding meta tags and search results, ranking etc... it's a waste of time and energy hoping the meta's will make a difference, they won't. This time is far better spent on your page content and product names & descriptions.

hope this helps, Dave
