  whois optout

guys - i'm considering opting out of the whois data on a couple of my domains, as i'm intending to use them purely as gossip sites, and don't want irate idiots turning up at my door.

but!

does doing this adversely affect your search engine rankings?

As far as I'm aware, the whois details have nothing to do with ranking. Opting out is always going to be the sensible option.

SE's CAN use Whois data to cross-ban sites - but you have to be VERY naughty for it to happen.

>> don't want irate idiots turning up at my door.

You need to fake a sale then. There are services that sell domain data, including Whois changes. Simply going to a DBP type service won't necessarily stop crazies turning up on your doorstep, if you had previously listed your address details, although it will stop the casual crazies

If it is a UK domain, Nominet do not allow you to opt out if you make money from the site or it is owned by a business.
