I was just wondering whether anybody has found it beneficial to have a bunch of domain names forwarding to just one site? Do search engines penalise you for it? Are there any other pros and cons. Any comments appreciated!
Depends why you are doing it, and how you are doing it.
If you are using 301 / 302 redirects to consolidate .com / .co.uk / .net etc, you should be fine. If you have hundreds of type-in domains, or use meta refresh / JS type rdirects, you may have problems. I've seen domains get fairly serious penalties for that kind of stuff
We have a lot of domains sitting around being pointed at various proper sites, but we've found Google isn't too clever and will start using one of the pointing domains as the main site URL. We've had to fix it with 301 redirects from each domain as they seem to regard anything else as duplicate content.
