  Deep Link vs Site Link

I'm currently looking around for sites to link with and am wondering whether it's best to get incoming deep links into certain product sections, or to get an incoming main page link.

Presumably it's best to get a main page link if your looking to increase your page rank since thats the page with the highest rank? (in this case anyway)

What are your thoughts?

Re: Deep Link vs Site Link

In simple terms - if you are looking to boost position for your main phrase which will be competitive (eg widgets) then get the lnks to the main page. This will help your mai page rank well for 'widgets' If you would like to boost your positioning for more targetted terms which will be less competitive (eg green widgets) then get the link to point to the 'green widgets' page on your website which will help the green widgets page to appear in the serps for 'green widgets'.

Very simplistic view of the process but it's where you should start - also don't even think about page rank in your seo activities, it is more of a side effect of a good site rather than a reason for a site being any good

Re: Deep Link vs Site Link

I think if you are in a good position already and have your main page with a decent ranking, e.g. PR 5 or 6 then you might start deeplinking heavily. Personally if everything is well navigable from your front page then I don't think there is a major problem linking on keywords to your main page.

My main worry with deeplinking is that if I deeplink to one of my categories with certain keywords does that increase the page rank of my main page? If so I'd probably deeplink more often.
