I am managing a site for a client who wants lots of flash and Ihave tried to tell them this is not not a great idea when it comes to the search engines.
I agree with Accelerator. Build an HTML site with flash elements for decoration.
It is amazing how good an html / ajax site can look with out flash though.
Jay - just explain to the client that SEs can't index and cache flash content. And that a lot of people surf with flash disabled.
If they won't listen to reason, never fear. Just explain that everything they show in flash also has to be shown in html in the noscript tag so that it is accessible to SEs and all the other visitors who can't read flash. In other words, they are really having to pay you to produce 2 sites.
The average visitor still spends less than 10 seconds between clicking to a page and clicking away from it.
The other side of the argument is that some people see the web the same as they see a printed brochure. If this is what they want from their web site, then give them the pretty (useless) flash and send them away happy.

HTML is best suited to content-based sites whereas Flash is best used for animated multi-media demonstrations. Both have their place.Flash is often put to good use as an element within an HTML page.
