free traffic?

hey! i just started a new web site and i am having a whole lotta trouble getting it promoted and spreading the word about it. Does anyone out there have any ideas of things that i could do to increase my traffic and draw a lot of people to my site? I dont have much money, if any, to spend on promoting it. Thanks a lot for any help ya'll have.

The first step is to make the content of your site something that a) people are interested in and b) other websites would want to link to.

Without that, and without money, it's going to be tough.

as mentioned content is very important, running loads of affiliate links is not enough anymore for Google and Yahoo.

I've have a look at investing in some SEO aswell, check out the SEO forum for ideas.

I'd also look at some of the following, obviously i dont know what your site is about so not everything is applicable:
- SEM, google's quite pricey, so maybe try Yahoo/MSN. then maybe MIVA, Mirago depending budgets
- Email, very good to recruitment and retention. but dont spam, email is extremely powerful if you do it properly.
- Viral, depending on the subject matter. games, videos, funnies can be good
- PR, if you can afford it and the product is good enough, get some PR people on the case. good for SEO also if on great sites.
- Social, tell your mates to tell their mates. use Facebook, myspace etc. again if it is good enough people will recommend it.
- Usability, users will come, but make sure they stay or recommend you.
- Competitions, people love freebies/giveaways. work out what you can afford and then maybe "win a ipod - recommend 10 friends" type thing. a little old school, but still works.
- mention your sites on these forums. get feedback from your peers, all good for getting the word out.

IMO marketing your website start with your content. Providing useful and relevant content in your niche is very crucial. Here are my top 5 picks:

1. Great content - be it information, service, products... providing relevance and usefulness gives you higher chances of making a visitor into a customer
2. Forum and blog posting on relevant niche - you participate constructively and learn new things while promoting your site via signature.
3. Pay-Per-Click - done properly, best at getting target traffic faster on a direct marketing approach to your potential clients.
4. Targeted Link backs - another premium way of getting the right traffic.
5. Article marketing - useful and relevant articles to your niche is a nice way of link baiting.
6. etc. etc....

Your best source for free traffic is the one and only SEO, but it isn't easy to do. Keyword research + directory submission + good unique content should give you a head start. SEO is certain industries is also a lot harder to conquer than other industries, thats why a lot of people are turning to making niche sites.
