  Bandwidth Cheat?

It occurred to me that if you had a site that was hitting or nearing it's bandwidth limits and had another site(s) that was less utilised, you could perhaps ......
include code and images that you kept on the less utilised site to reduce what is transferred from the main site. Just like the way links to merchant images, etc happen.
.... to save a bit of money?

Does that make sense??? Sort of does to me!

Just a thought!

Yeap makes perfect sense, it's kind of like a simple load balance.. In the very early days of being on the Internet when bandwidth was more costly I used to do that a lot to save a few pounds, and anything big was stuck on my free ISP space he he

I've also found that accounts with large amounts of disk space and bandwidth are available very cheaply if you don't want httpaccess. I bought 1 with 35Gb, 500Mb for just a few pound per month, i use it to equalise my other accounts. Can only be used for images and downloads, but that sounds to me what you are talking about.

Hmmm,
Glad I started this one .... once traffic starts to build on my 1st couple of site's I think this could be worth some serious Cost v Beneit analysis.

That's assuming the hits start coming of course

I was wondering about bandwidth recently, too. It wouldn't have been a prob but I've just put a poster site & art site live that will serve around 500K - 2Mb in a session. I've got about 15Gb free at present, but go over that and there's an automatic charge of 5p / Mb. That's when they try to sell me a dedicated server and I have to pay £10K for my own production db. NOT.

5p a Mb?

I might have my maths in a right mess here but is that not £51.20 per Gig of Datatransfer ( I know we call it bandwidth but that's not the right term )

1Gig = 1,024 Mb so 1024 times £0.05 = £51.20... that being the case all I can say is what a rip off. Of course I was not that great at maths so might have it all wrong

A lot of companies charge for excess data transfer per megabyte, because they think people won't realise how expensive a few pence per MB really is.

If you need extra data transfer, you can get 30GB a month for only $48 at www.myqth.com, which seems like a bargain. Although it's dirt cheap, it's the same company as hostroute.com which people have recommended.

I certainly wouldn't recommend somewhere like myqth for hosting a website, but they might be a good place to put any big files, so you don't go over your limit with your regular hosting company, specially if you have lots of pictures, or big files such as mp3s.

I've never had a problem with data transfer myself because I try to make my pages quick to download, so I don't use many graphics.
I almost went over the limit with one of my hosting accounts last month (I used 2997 out of 3000 MB!), because a link to a private video file I shared with a few people got posted on a message board and several hundred people downloaded it. Won't make that mistake again!

You could say that. It seems like everything is extra. The "add-on" options page is massive and everything costs. With hosters it's just down to HOW MUCH you can tolerate being ripped off, not IF you can tolerate it.

I wouldn't take this deal, i have an account with Gordon that is 30Gb/500Mb, and he charges me something like £7 per month (it's less than £8 anyway). This is not hosting, just disk space and bandwidth.

I do pay him over £60 per month for other accounts though, which may be the reason.

I did have to accept having this space in the US for that price though.
