Php & Sql

New to this game -here goes...I have a basic website with just pure html (600 odd pages) but have now decided to try my hand at php and sql as updating is a real issue! You live and learn though!
I've done a bit of reading i.e. php and mysql for dummies etc but.....I would really like to know where to start for proper. I have managed to create a database in mysql but don't really have the patience or understanding to create php files to read and display the output.
The question has to be is there somewhere out there to find example scripts, search forms etc to help me out?

should have said - mysql! To judge my own inteligence - how easy or hard is it to pick up php etc? I am someone who has just picked up html six months ago.

Hard to say without knowing your background - if you have any previous programming experience then you should find it fairly easy, just a matter of learning the syntax.

If you've no programming experience at all, then it will obviously be harder as you have to learn the general principles of programming.

Best thing to do is grab some simple code snippets from the two sites mentioned and try and work your way through them learning what they do. Then you can start working on simple pages for yourself (ignore the SQL for now - just do things like passing arguments).

If you get really stuck php.net has all the PHP keywords categorised on it with code examples.

I started learning php in April. I have many years of programming experience, but personally I find it hard, because of the way it mixes in with html and mysql. I often find I have to spend days on a few lines of code. For example, I remember one problem I had where the data was actually being mistaken for programming code - miracle I ever sussed out that one - I have never worked before with a language that writes itself, but that's sort of how php works and to me, it seems full of paradoxes that I can't even describe, but I like mind games, luckily.

It's great when you do get a bit working, because a few lines can do a lot.

Agree with Ianm - get bits of code off the Internet and play around with it.

... and yes, I'm stuck right now in a confusing logic problem with it, trying to do something which in any other language would be piddly easy, so maybe I'm biased, but this happens a lot.

If you have DW 2004 MX then buy Dreamweaver MX 2004 with ASP, PHP and Colfusion from Jeffery Bardzell.

Without doubt the best training book I have ever read. I went from zero PHP knowledge to a fully functioning site using a couple of merchant data feeds in a week or so.
