nephews laptop been hijacked with .lnk extensions

I don't know what the lads been up to!!! but all his programmes now have this .lnk extension - he's blaming his brother - kids eh -

but he can't open any of his files because the 'puter doesn't know how to open .lnk files - he can still access the internet, apparently though.

Can anyone point me to an easy to understand explanation how to revert all his files back to how they were - I don't think he's on XP - or tell me in words of one syllable how to do it.

Sounds like Windows is ill to me - .lnk files are shortcuts so if they're all over the desktop I'd guess a registry key is missing/broken - I'm sure someone else will have a more user friendly fix more this but this might work if not:

Careful - things might go more wrong if you change the wrong thing in the registry!
