how do you open a .tar.gz zip file

when trying to download the tradedoubler product feed - it comes as a .tar.gz - and my version of winzip won't open it - am I doing something wrong?

Winzip should open it ok, it could be that the .gz extension isn't associated with winzip. Either try opening winzip first then use the open button to find the gz file, or download the latest version of winzip and install it, making sure you let it associate itself with as many file types as it knows (if it asks).

You might also find that you need to do it in 2 stages (can't remember for sure what WinZip does with files that have been tar'd and zipped) - unzip the .gz file and then double click on the .tar file in the archive to get WinZip to un tar it.

if you are using linux or unix, type the command, tar -xvzf <filename>, and it should unzip all the files. Hope it can help you.

is a handy alternative to winzip which handles .tar and .gz archives better.
