First php bb : Some questions

Hiya, and Happy Christmas/New Year.

Just trying to set up a 'php bb' forum for the first time. Despite the fact the instructions seem really simple, I'm having problems.

I've uploaded all of the phpbb2 files and folders to a 'forum' folder I've created (www.mysite/web/forum). Correct?

Then, for starters, I can't get the permission on config.php changed to 666, before attempting to install.

So I can't get the installation kick-started.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

In any case, once I get the above sorted, how will I link to the forum from my site? (Probably a text link like <a href="http://www.mysite.co.uk/forum/">Forum</a> ???)

('Spot-the-newbie' again!)
Thanks
Al

hi you need to login to your space using cuteftp or some other ftp prog locate the folder and with cute you right click on the folder go to properties/chmod and alter the properties to 666 read/write

and yes the link will be right as long as the forum is in a forum folder

Yep, changed the permission now. (The options to change permissions were greyed out before).

So :

Uploaded files and folders. Got rid of the 'forum' folder now, though.

Used browser to visit ......................co.uk/phpBB2/install/install.php

Entered the correct details required by the installation page.

Hit 'Submit, or is it 'Start installation'.

Received the following error message :

phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database

What now, for goodness' sake?
Any guidance greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Al

It seems I might've tried installing with the wrong host-name.

But, now that I've corrected it, when I click on 'Start install', I get the error message :

An error has occurred during installation
An error occurred trying to update the database
Table 'phpbb_auth_access' already exists

And I don't seem to be able to get past that now.

Excuse ignorance, but how can I get round the above ?

Thanks
Al

D'OH! Almost got there this time!?

Didn't know how to delete the table, so changed table prefix to from phpbb_ to phpbb1_

Clicked on 'Complete installation', and changed permission on config.php to 644

Placed text-link to the forum on a web-page

Uploaded page

Clicked on 'Forum' link

Error : Page not found

Just to check, because my head's spinning a bit with this and some other tech-y stuff :

Can someone just confirm for me how the text-link should read?

Thanks
Al

Barry seems to know their stuff
Its hard to tell without having 'hands on' any further information, but I'll take a stab at it being down to the 'default document'

If the 'Forum' link is to a plain directory eg
......................co.uk/phpBB2/

try typing
......................co.uk/phpBB2/index.php

'Thanks' nethost and Barry.

And Happy New Year!

I got the b-b up-and-running a few days ago, and am now trying to change the style.

I selected the style I really want from the phpBB site, and downloaded the folders/files. Thing is, there's no css file! Any ideas why not?

Thanks for any guidance you - or anyone else - can give.
Al

1. You need to download the full style to your PC and then upload it to the folder marked templates. You should already see 1 folder called subsilver in that directory.

2. Go to the BB control panel and select the option to ADD STYLES. Select the style you have just uploaded.

3. Go to GENERAL ADMIN/CONFIGURATION in the control panel and scrool down to DEFAULT STYLE in the GENERAL BOARD SETTINGS panel and again select the new theme from the dropdown menu.

4. Save and enjoy.

Thanks. Yes, I did all of that, but seemed to be missing the necessary css file for the style I wanted.

In any case, after failing to change the style in the normal way (as described by you), I last night created another style of my own from the 'subSilver' default, and changed the colours to suit the look of my site. Then changed the default to the one I created (as you've suggested). Was disappointed not to be able to simply use the style I wanted, but the one I've created now isn't too shabby either.

By the way : I discovered that I couldn't delete subSilver (which I really would've liked to do, as the colour-scheme is completely at odds with the site).

I've started the forum by adding a few messages myself, and am waiting for some responses from visitors.

Thanks again
Al
