  How big are you? :D

Just starting the process for creating a whole new site @ GLTC and have come up against the page size issue, I’m leaning towards optimising the site to 1024 px but my web company is in favour of 800 px.

Has anyone ever tested conversion vs. page size? Any opinions?

Thanks in advance

Will

Personally, I'm an advocated of accommodating both 800x600 and 1024x768. I don't see the point in alienating visitors when there's no need to. I think 800x600 still represents somewhere around 10-15% bracket, so it's still too significant to ignore IMO.

Are those using the lower res monitors (older equipment possibly?) likely to be the kind of people who buy online though??

Or am I trying to find a commonality that doesn't exist?

Hi Simon

That was my thinking, except lots of companies have their monitors set @ 800 x 600 as standard. I would love to know if anyone can look at conversion by screen resolution, I can’t as my analytics package is a tad rubbish!

If you have looked at conversion by screen resolution please let us know the results, you don’t need to publish actual sales figs just a % of sales by screen size. (Pretty please )

universities tend to have smaller screens, easy solution is to have a 100% setup if you can with your specific design, else its better to do the slightly smaller one and have it centred on the screen they may not notice the difference.

Easiest thing to do is check your visitors browser useage and find out thier resolution. If youve got tracking software installed.

Thanks for that.

Luckily University students tend not to have children and those that do can’t afford us!

Sorry to be a bit Fick (with an F) but what does 100% setup mean? (In simple terms for my pea brain!)

Thanks

Will

Why not go for a size that changes? I.e. put everything in a table with 100% width\height, make sure your menus down the left and right static and your content adjustable?

sorry, I tend to think things and not explain them well sometimes (when will telepathic technology come along)

setup your table widths to 100% rather than exact pixels wide, then it will adjust to the window size (this site does that until you get so small things like the banner are too big for the page then it makes it need to side scroll, test it out by resizing your window)

Ah - like healthy Direct … I'm not too keen on the white space on larger screens and uncertainty with how the page would be displayed, am I being too precious?

That just means that the page is designed to use 100% of the available width so the screen stretches to fit the space available

www.olbg.co.uk is 100% width but you still have to think about the effect narrower browser widths will have on the display

For example we have a max of 10 tabs at the top as any more would go off the screen in 800x600. When our stats show that 800x600 is under 5% then I expect we'll add a whole lot more

Im beginning to wonder now though whether those 10-15% left on 800x600 almost have an expectation that they may have to scroll in both directions to see a site (i.e. its their fault for having an old PC), rather than feeling that the site isnt well designed

Hi Antony

I think you are right about peoples expectations, as a Gmail user I’m used to Html emails coming through all jumbled up and I don’t worry about it, (Unless it’s one of mine!)
