  h and strong tags

Most of my web pages have 2000+ words of content which is broken down into sub paragraphs and headings. I usually use the strong tag for each heading and the main heading as an h1 tag. Would I get more hits from the search engines if I used h2, h3, h4, h5 and h6 tags for each subsequent sub headings? Or would I get more just using an h1 tag and then using the strong tags?

You'd be much better off using h1, h2, h3 etc. It's the correct way to code and should help with Google.

Cheers,
Jon

And you can use CSS to style all of the h tags any way you like - you don't have to stick with the default.
For instance, I style the main title image of a site in a H1 tag like this:
...h1{background-image: url(images/title.gif);}
and have the HTML like this:
...<h1 title="website title"><span style="visibility:hidden">WEBSITE TITLE</span></h1>
This ensures that screenreaders and searchbots read the title, but it doesn't appear on the page.

Correctly structured web pages with h tags etc. will certainly help. Use css to make them appear as you want... ie. font size, colour etc. This is good practise as browsers display h tags differently. For instance, IE will display h tags in a bigger font than Firefox.

Anything that shows something different to a search bot than it does to a user is asking for trouble.

Very imporatant, 'correctly' as in dont stick everything in a h1 tag id not really want to chance more than 2 h1 tags on a normal sized page, then just work your way down fro mthere, maybe 6 h2 tags, after that they mean very little but might still be worth doing just for style formatting sakes.

I'm following web accessibility guidelines; I also have invisible "skip nav" text on another site (again following guidelines). I think that Google's bots can tell the difference - I hope!
