How many 301 redirects is too many?

Hi

I've got several pages that now have new names.
Currently I have created several pages and put a link
to the corresponding new page on it, but I'm thinking
that I should bite the bullet and just do 301 redirects.

So, my question is how many 301 redirects is
too many? Or can I do as many as I want?

Can I redirect all files in a directory to a new directory
with one 301 redirect?

(I shall be applying them via cpanel.)

Thanks

Steve

Mmm, its hard to say but here's my two cents:

If you a moving several pages from one location to a (permanent) new location then you can use as many 301 redirects as you want.

The only caveat I would use is that after about a week you need to make sure that you remove as many links to the old pages as poss and replace them with links to you new pages. i.e. make it obvious that you are cutting your ties with the old pages.

The second option, moving several pages to a single new page Id be very careful about. Search engine spammers have been doing this for ages.

Id make sure that you only do a dozen or so at a time over a period of weeks and make sure you do use 301, not 302.

Best of luck!

Hi

Thanks Globochris. I'm redirecting 20 or so pages to 20 or so
existing pages and I haven't been linking to these old pages
for some time (the search engines have).

Let's hope I don't look like a spammer
