  Php redirects based on country?

My website was written for the UK market but I also get traffic from the US.
Obviously my Mothercare and Boots ads are of no use to these people.

Just wondered if there's a bulletproof way to redirect a visitor to different default web page based on the visitor's country of origin?
Thanks

Re: Php redirects based on country?

erm.. it can be done but isnt easy ..

it would involve checking all of the visitors IP's against RIPE , ARIN to determine the location

would put a lot of strain on your server and i tried it on a shared hosting account a while ago and got my account terminated

my advice.. dont bother.. its not worth it ...

1 of my sites gets 80% US traffic but i cant do anything with it

MaxMind - GeoIP | Database Product Features is probably the cheapest database of this information that I've come across.

I should point out that its rare for this stuff to be cheap. IP location is step 3 or 4 in a decent fraud prevention system.

It's a bit ropey but you could use the locale

$_SERVER[HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE];

Record it for a while and you'll see what I mean

You can improve your UK traffic by adding your UK address to all the pages - as you don't want to regionalise your UK traffic, just UK and your area exchange code in the phone number will go a long way to cutting down on the international traffic. Your trading address on the contact page will also help

If you have a .com domain, make sure it is hosted on a UK IP address.

Whenever you write a landing page, emphasise UK about as much as you do the other secondary phrases on your page. If you keep getting international traffic, add a link to the landing page to redirect them to a page that does promote something in their own country - no point in wasting the traffic.

Re: Php redirects based on country?

There's no absolute way as for example AOL sometimes report their users IP's as being US based when in reality they're in the UK or Germany. Just depends what IP they happened to use for the new batch. Can also happen for some other ISPs, eg: Wanadoo as some of theirs report to France.

Maybe have a US flag somewhere on the page and redirect them to a US version of the page. Or host your site in the UK and it should have more chance of appearing for UK visitors rather than US (in Google at least).
