  Dreamweaver alternatives

Being a tight wad I don't want to fork out for a Dreamweaver license. Anyone tried any good alternatives? Preferably open source, ideally available for both Mac and PC. I can hand code HTML I just need the features to speed it up eg : code completion / formatting and the ability to split screen the code and the preview so that I can click on part of the preview and go straight to the relevant bit of HTML.

I've also been on the lookout for a Photoshop alternative as I don't need 95% of the features so can't justify the expense. Paint.Net seems to do everything I need on Windows, GimpShop is good on Mac but just keeps crashing on XP.

Try:

NVU

I haven't tried it yet but I'd like to know what you think of it.

Doesn't GIMP work for PC too??

GIMP - The GNU Image Manipulation Program

Rgds

Accelerator

Thanks for the quick response. No wonder you're called Accelerator!

Hadn't heard of NVU. Looks worth keeping an eye on although seems to be lacking code completion at the moment.

As for Gimp - it does work on PC but I find it a bit idiosyncratic. GimpShop is the same program with menus and things moved around to make it more like a clone of Photoshop. I've just been playing around with it now and I think I've fixed the problem I had before by replacing a few files with their current Gimp versions as detailed towards the end of this page : Gimp For Windows Crashes When Creating New Image

NVU sucks ..
unless you want HTML.. trying to do PHP is a nightmare as it saves pages by default with .html

also working with pure CSS sites with it is a big no no

still trying to find a good alternative until dreamweaver wants to laod properly and stop crashing on my pc lol

If you have a Mac, Rapidweaver is sensational for quick 'n 'dirty template based sites. It costs $50.

If it's just for the web / home printing then paint.net is very good (and free). It only falls down on its lack of CMYK colour seperation, which you only need if you are using a professional print shop for really large jobs.

  Re: Dreamweaver alternatives

There was a version of Rapidweaver free on a recent magazine coverdisc - either .net or Web designer (probably .net)

If you want to text edit, then Notepad++ is open source and very good indeed.

If you want WISYWIG then what about the free version of Visual Studio you can download from Microsoft. It works well with html sites but can be a bit difficult to get your head round.

For the PC - NoteTab - you want either the free or the pro version.

For the Mac - TextWrangler is the free version of BBedit. If you want to pay a few pennies then PageSpinner gets my vote for html / php and cssEdit for css.

  Re: Dreamweaver alternatives

I use WeBuilder, which is great for xhtml, css, php, javascript, pearl and asp.. or there is RapidPHP from the same outfit which is a bit cheaper and does not support Pearl or ASP. Both are great editors and pretty cheap.

I have used Dreamweaver in the past and WeBuilder is way better (although it can not be used as a WYSIWYG editor)
