Slow site

Hello,

I'm just adding the finishing touches to the framework of my main site (in sig). It's built using WordPress. Trouble is, I'm pretty sure it's devastatingly slow. It's not getting many visitors atm (that or they're bouncing before they get tracked) but I was wondering if you think it's slow, and how can you speed it up? Is it because of php and server side stuff? I haven't delved into dynamic sites before ...

Hi Phil

Firstly, well done on some good manipulation of Wordpress, it looks really good. However, I'm not sure that Wordpress was designed to be used for such a large site, which could be the reason for your slow speed.
Another reason could be your hosting provider, I'm a bit of a technological dufus but I'm sure someone else on this forum knows how to check if the servers are at least average in speed.

loads fine here.. both on my parents 2mb and also from my house 8mb.. workin fine & nice site well done

A lot of the site did seem quick, the plain text pages.

However, it was when it started pulling images from Amazon that it really slowed down, indicating its the speed of Amazons servers rather than your own.

Thanks for your kind comments. I think the Amazon pictures and widgets are a big factor and I'll take a look at the implementation of them on the site. Ta very much!

Oops yes... only just replaced the html index with this new php index file that doesn't (yet) contain meta stuff.

Just visited Web Page Speed Report - WebSiteOptimization.com and they said that on a 56kbps modem, it would take 36.57 seconds to load. Granted that many people don't have dialup anymore but as a guide, it should be less than 15 seconds at least. My blog is 15.33 seconds for comparison.

I did load up your site twice and the second time was super fast. Sounds to me like you need to have a word with your host and see if there's any reason why the server is slow. I've just had a look at your webhost (I assume M World Hosting) and they are no longer selling space apparently which suggests the slow speed is because of a full server.

I have no idea who I'm hosted with, it's one of those "on a friends' bit of space" things I think. My flatmate has access to the panel and all that malarky. I am desperate to start getting my own hosting packages as I've just bought several more domains which I want to start developing in the new year.

Trouble is, I know sod all about web hosting. What's a reseller account, how much space/bandwidth will I need etc. Plus there seems to be new threads popping up all the time - dont trust this host, dont touch that host etc. The most important thing for me atm is that my current host doesn't have rewrite access therefore no permalinks!

Search for your WHOIS record and your nameservers pointed to the above named host.
