Help Installing Wordpress MU on Subdomains using Plesk!

Firstly, thanks to all those that have tried to help and failed thus far!

Wordpress MU is a rather nifty looking way of hosting multiple blogs - WordPress MU › Home

However, when I set this up in Plesk I can't get the subdomains to work. The default setup is http://blogname1.domain.com, http://blogname2.domain.com etc

I can't for the life of me get it to work, <anything>.domain.com does resolve to my server ip but not the site. http://domain.com does work fine with the blog homepage on it.

Any advice on wildcard subdomains working with Plesk and 1and1 and/or general DNS or Wordpress MU advice is much appreciated!

My mate seems to think that "the problem is definitely with the host header redirection
Maybe your dns records do not pass them on" is the problem.

Someone else says "I'm sure you need a redirect from subdomain.domain.com to the specified virtual folder" but I'm damned if I know how to do that!

Any help may be rewarded with mousemats.

Gav

First, get a host without either Plesk or cPanel. What you want to do will not be possible unless you have 100% control over the server config files. Neither Plesk nor cPanel will allow you this level of control.

Once you have control over the server config, what you want to do will be very easy to set up [using the apache options].

Re: Help Installing Wordpress MU on Subdomains using Plesk!

I tried a few things to get this working on a site of mine and played around with it on a couple of domains. I'm with clook and using cpanel and got it working ok (to a point).

The bit I needed to get clook to do was to make a change to the httpd.conf file, everything else I could do myself.

The best walkthrough I've found (although it talks of cpanel it might be useful to you) is at This Site.

I know this is suitabily vague as I did it a month or so ago but if you think I can be of use let me know.

Re: Help Installing Wordpress MU on Subdomains using Plesk!

I really hate Plesk, its a real load of c**p!

Having to battle with it on behalf of a client and its a nightmare! Wanted to set up an FTP account for them, to allow someone access to just one directory. Standard stuff, but plesk can't do it, they only allow one FTP user who has control over everything. Only way round it is by manually messing with server config files.

Has made life really difficult for me in a number of ways, Im used to running a server from the command line, but it takes all control away from you, so it ends up with bodges.

Re: Help Installing Wordpress MU on Subdomains using Plesk!

Thanks for the help guys, I'm going to give all this a go over Xmas. It's a 1and1 value server, I'm not a pro at all this stuff, so in some ways Plesk at least offers a nice UI. Not that I'm sure that's what you should be looking for in a server.

A particular thanks to the helpful chap who PM'ed me the following...

"In your vhost.conf file, put:

ServerAlias *.domain.com

Then restart plesk (something like):
sudo /usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/websrvmng -a -v

Add a wildcard DNS entry and you'll be able to use any subdomain."

James - NEVER SURRENDER!!!

Gav did you ever get this working?

Thanks to this thread and the blogopreneur.com one I've just got it working on Clook and I failed on the subdomains last time, so I'm happy about that

Hey Ian, no it didn't get working with the subdomains. It just didn't seem worth the bother.

You can see a good example at Programme News (I'm not still working there any more btw, but this is the site it referred to in the above thread).
