htaccess forward slashes

Need some help with htaccess files

I have an htaccess file in the home directory, and an htaccess file in directoryX, but none in directoryY

When I type in www.mywebsite.com/directoryY it redirects to www.mywebsite.com/directoryY/

but when I trype in www.mywebsite.com/directoryX it redirects to http://www.mywebsite.com/directoryX/...ts/directoryX/

any ideas?
